The campsites were clean. The 2nd bathroom was the cleanest, even smelled good! The one closest to the lower numbered sites, was gross and filled with flies. The river is about a 10-minute, mild hike down (with lots of bugs flying into your eyes, ears, nose & mouth), but a strenuous hike up!Bring water, bug spray, yellow jacket traps, or a zip closed canopy to eat under.Neighbors were decent, except the campers at site 2 & 3, as they came back to camp each night around 9pm and then partied until 11:30pm! We were hoping the camphost would shut them down earlier, but it never happened. We loved that the camphoat had our parking permit, and information ready for us at the campsite! No need to check-in!

Very good experience overall. Welcoming camp host, clear with rules.Vault toilets available, no showers. There is a garbage and recycling can that are bear proof and as long as you clean up and store food properly under a tarp in a locked car (we put all food in coolers additionally), bears leave you alone. Creek is not easy to get to. A 15 min drive from Bass Lake.Not good cell service. For any decent cell service, Bass Lake will have it.Recommend this campsite! You can really see the night sky and milky way.

The site and the river were awesome, but the camp host ruined it for us. He was extremely rude and very quick to judge. We were the quietest campers in the campground yet he has a CAMERA pointed right at out campsite. This would be a great campground if they got a new camp host,

Well maintained campsite even though it is not as developed as some others. The campground was generally great, secluded in a beautiful wooded setting, and wonderfully quiet. The vault toilets were surprisingly well-kept. The only complaint we had was that many of the sites (if not all) were not level and finding a semi-level place for a larger tent (6 person for us) was difficult and the picnic tables were uneven as well. Overall, quite pleased.

The latrines were very clean and new. It is a beautiful hilly area. While one site we looked at didn't have a very flat area to pitch a tent, the others did. If you don't mind bringing your own water, it is a very nice site.

The facilities were not comparable to other campgrounds to deserve the same cost of booking

This campground is pretty good. I started my reservation Thursday and stayed until Sunday. There was no one here until Friday. Only saw 2 other campers the whole weekend. The spots are nice - most are quite shaded. Very pretty but difficult to charge solar if you have any. The bugs here were pretty bad. A lot of gnats and yellow jackets. No campground water. The surrounding area is beautiful. Bass Lake is a treasure!

Was a gorgeous campsite! Encountered a lot of yellow jackets while cooking food but otherwise was a nice and quiet area.

Lovely peaceful, wooded location for a basic, well-maintained campground. Forests, a creek, and alpine meadows to explore nearby. Bass Lake is not that far away if you want some time on the water or need supplies. We much preferred the back-to-nature vibe at Chilkoot over the bustling and at times noisy lakeside campgrounds.

I had a good experience at the campground, but just a few things I wanted to share with future campers that I did not realize before arriving. All reviews about Jery the camp host are very accurate! He is great, welcoming, giving tips and information upon arrival. What I did know is that you do not park next to your campsite. You cannot reserve a specific site upon booking and once we arrived, we realized our campsite was the furthest from the parking area out of all the sites. Jerry mentioned no bears come into the area, but we had a bear canister just in case.

BEAUTIFUL little spot. Hidden gem. Campsites are dispersed enough from each other. Yosemite NP is about 1 1/2 hrs north. Sequoia is within a 3 hr drive south. Bass Lake less is than 30 mins away; nearby for water activities. The campground has a nearby trail to a waterfall—follow the creek. Very nice camp host, and knowledgeable. Camp host cleans restrooms regularly. No need to check in, he will find you. Good trees around to hang hammock up. Not too many mosquitoes or flies. Lots of bees/wasps. Easy to drive in to.

Bees were everywhere. Really fine dust made our campsite really dirty. Loud neighbors for a very small camp. Never saw the host. We had to help some other campers find their spots. I would never come here again.

My children were on a path next to our campsite and were attached by yellow jackets from a nest that was not visible in the ground. It was a horrific experience. The camp attendant was able to find the nest and destroy it and recreation.gov refunded us a nights stay as we left early because we were afraid my son would need medical attention, and I understand these things happen out in nature, but there was no warning of wasps or yellow jackets or anything and the attendant told us afterwards that he had been trying to find the nest. I wish we knew and could have prepared our children on what to do if they came upon these evil creatures. I have 5 children and none of them want to go camping again. I hope that changes. Our campsite was also covered in sand bees or some kind of bee. They didn't sting us, but they got into all our food and items--we dealt with it the entire time we camped until we were attached by the yellow jackets. That was it for us!

Had a great stay at Chilkoot! It's only about 15 minutes up a winding road from the main road around Bass Lake (road 274), but very quiet and secluded. The camp host Jerry was very welcoming and informative-- you can buy firewood from him or collect some in the area, and he can give you tips for Yosemite or other local activities. Definitely check out the nearby creek that Jerry can give you directions to, it's a gem. Yosemite was our primary purpose of the trip and it took about 30 minutes to drive to the park entrance and 1hour 40 minutes total to get to Yosemite Valley. Ultimately it worked out well for us just staying a couple days! Restroom is just a pit toilet and water is not available onsite so plan ahead or grab some nearby around Bass Lake. Also had almost zero cell service for Sprint and T Mobile so beware.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
