We have been camping here for nearly 40 years. With the exception the last couple of years due to low reservoir water and COVID. We made it, finally again this year. The reservoir was looking good, water levels were up, not full, but up. My issue is price now vs what we got. In years past the bathrooms were cleaned and checked daily. That never happened our entire 5 night stay. Thank goodness we were in an RV instead of a tent. Bathrooms were dirty, no TP. Pretty disgusting. Ive always been happy to recommend Hayward Flats campground, not so much now. We will probably try again because of the nostalgia, and we love the reservoir. But come on. We pay more and we expect a clean restroom at least

Was looking forward to this campsite in the Trinity Alps region of CA. When I arrived I was shocked to see a very empty campground and most of the trees marked up with brighly colored paint (due for 'thinning'; very heavy thinning IMHO). The 'lake' is way down so the shoreline is fairly ugly red gravel/sand. Facilities were not topnotch. So I cannot say I highly recommend this campsite.

The photos on Recreation.gov were somewhat misleading as the terrain was much steeper in the Elderberry Loop where we camped in site 89. The men's restroom was clean, but the woman's was a mess. We did not find or see a Campground host during our three day stay.

Campsite was clean but very compact. Room for maybe 2 tents and only 2 vehicles if you squeeze. If you need more space, get a double. We ended up getting an adjacent spot since there were 7 of us and we weren't all sharing tents. There was no bear bin at this site (or at any site on the inner part of the loop, I believe). Lake access from the elderberry loop is great. There were a LOT of yellowjackets, so not recommended if you're squeamish or allergic. Not sure how other campsites are, but they were even down by the lake in small numbers. Would rate higher but for the yellowjackets. It was a beautiful site and we had a great time.

This was a long 6 hour drive for us. Upon arrival we found another vehicle from our neighbors parked in our spot. We eventually tracked down the people and they said they parked it there because they didnt want to pay extra for a vehicle. So they moved and we started to get set up. Luckily the small driveway was just big enough for our tent trailer and our truck. The other few sites around us we way to small and at a steep Slope. We soon noticed that there were blue and black painted stripes on almost every tree there. There was lots of trash around and the same car neighbor had trash thrown all on the ground behind his truck. Once we got settled we couldnt help notice the yellow jackets. There were thousands and the campground even had a trap hanging. The two nights was hard to sleep due to the same neighbors (3 sites, large group) running their generators all night. We asked if they could be turned off and was told sure and then they went off for 1 hour at 11pm and then for a bit between 4-5am. Thankfully they left and our last night there was nice and quiet, besides the crows at 6am. The bathrooms were dirty, no toilet paper, no hand soap although my son said there was some in the mens bathroom. But mens bathroom also had a ton of toilet paper outside the building. The last day/night the bathroom was cleaned still no soap. It looked like there was an overflow issue at the bathrooms. The two stars are for the lake, great temperature and clean and the beautiful scenery on the lake. There were barely any people there so it felt like our own private lake most days. The marina staff was friendly. This is a must have a boat kinda camping. It would had been horrible if we couldnt escape the site all day. I would probably return but only Im a houseboat.

The bee's were unbearable, we were unable to cook or eat outside, many in our group were stung at least once some several times.

Site B20 has no bear box like every other site and several campers wander through the site. One bathroom was pleasant, and the other one was clogged and the individual that came to "clean" it did nothing to resolve the issue. Trash cans were overflowing with trash.

The camp was well kempt and clean. Its in a great location: on the lake and nearby numerous trails. This camp is great for families or those looking for a base for hitting the trails. Ive been hiking and camping at Trinity since the mid 90s, Hayward Flat was easy camping with plenty of sites.

Water was lower than expected given the winter snowpack and amount of rain. A lot of branches and downed trees around the camp area. Bathrooms poorly maintained.

We love this campground!! It sits 2 miles off the highway, so very quiet. Big spacious sites with lots of trees. Clean restrooms and water close by. The perfect place for relaxing.

This is a basic, no frills campground. It’s a very long and exhausting walk down to the water. The shoreline was muddy and steep. The forest is beautiful and the toilets flush so that’s a plus. I’m not sure that we’ll return. It wasn’t worth the drive for us.

The campground is large, broken up into different sections. We stayed in Elderberry loop which has views of the water. As of May 2023 the water levels are still very low. You have to hike down embankments to actually get to the water. There is no shade down by the water so it heats up quickly. On the opposite side of the water you are able to drive down a boat ramp and drive to the water. It is about a 15 minute drive from the campground to get to the boat launch. The campground is very shaded with tress, offering moderate privacy but all your neighbors are close by. Toilets were flush with running water. Tidy and clean. Not all sites have bear boxes. AT&T had no cell service in campsite or the nearest town of Trinity Center. The town does have a general store for dry goods, ice, gas, ect. It is about 20 minutes from the camp. Because the water is so low it is tough to fully enjoy what this spot has to offer. Limited adventures for the family on day trips.

Easily accessible bathrooms and water spigots. The lake was dried up near this campground, but can be accessed by a drive. Sites are easy to find and well signed.

Beautiful campground with an amazing staff. However, they need to manage the water level better, yes there is a drought but after coming to the lake for 15 years it has never been this low in June. Also, there needs to be an RV dump in the campground, this seems like a simple request and easily built and serviced. Happy to pay a bit more for the convenience. Thank you.

Been going to Hayward Flat for 46 years. The bathrooms are always a problem and need to be redone so this doesn't happen every year. People need access to bathrooms that work. We have to go to different ones as they close them down due to plumbing problems. Please, Please fix the bathrooms.

Had a reservation for 8 days. The park closed a couple days into my reservation due to fires. I got a notification, so I didn’t go. I was refunded the closure days but not the days prior. The website gives instructions how to request a refund but this feature is unavailable. Please consider refunding me the fifty something dollars. Appreciated

When we arrived the trash was overflowing. The out-houses began to smell badly. the water was shut off for two days. Please place a dumpster at the lower restroom at dogwood loop. when the lake level is this low we need vehicle access to the boats.

I have been camping here for 30+ years and what I love this place. We have over the years, dealt with low water levels and on occasions even the loss of water in the campsites. What I wish would happen is that they did some over due upgrades. Bathrooms need some TLC, bring back more dumpsters as there are very few, Reopen and fix the closed bathrooms. Lastly, add bear boxes to the remainder of the Buckeye loop in Hayward flat.

Good size spots, most on a hill.

Wonderful place! We all loved it. Camp sites are spread enough to have a bit privacy, clean on the site and clean bathrooms, beautiful view of the lake. Be advised: very poor internet and low water(May 30 2021)

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
