Carolina Hemlocks Rec Area, Burnsville, NC

Carolina Hemlocks Rec Area is located in the Appalachian Ranger District of the National Forests in North Carolina (1 hr 3 min northeast of Asheville, NC) with an elevation of 2,760 feet. There are a total of 39 campsites. The campground is normally open from mid April to the end of October. 34 sites can accommodate RVs between 15 and 40 feet. All sites are currently reservable. 3 sites have electric hookups. Fees range from $28.00 to $70.00.

The office staff was wonderful and accommodating. This site was very loud (close to the road) and very minimal privacy - I felt like I was camping *with* my neighbors on both sides. I would not stay here again.

Beautiful location we continue to return to over the years. Water is lower than normal at the moment so tubing is not recommended.

Wonderful stay in shadow of the black mountain range with great swimming, perfect for my kiddos. Hosts were really lovely and particularly sweet to my kids. Will be back!

Best swimming hole, spacious campsites with different site options across the road. There is a little road noise but didnt bother us.

The campsite is close to Mt.Mitchell, thats nice. However, the camp is right next to a highway so you definitely dont get the in complete nature feel. Probably will never return but it wasnt that bad.

Wonderful swimming experience and tubing on the South Toe River. Very helpful and friendly staff. Only downside was being so close to the road.

Beautiful scenic campground right on the Toe river. Our site was great (site 13) but some sites are quite small and awkward so you need to pay attention to which one you book. Great access to swimming holes and when the water is a little higher, probably tubing. Could see many trout in the river too, so fishing is probably also good. Campground is bisected by Hwy 80, so traffic noise persists all night. Also the bath house is located toward the north end of the campground so it would be nice if they would add a bath house near the south end. The hosts were very nice and welcoming!

The river and the swimming hole are the big positives with this area. There are a few water falls within a short drive. Descent cell service. Camp host extremely friendly and helpful. Campsites along the river are smaller.

We visited in a 28' motorhome. The campground is not set up for motorhomes or even trailers of any length over 15'. The sites were not level and was very primitive. The CG should be more clear as to what the sites can provide to campers.Would not recommend to go there.

The water in the campground spigots, and in fact the whole campground, was not drinkable. We only found out when we asked the host specifically about the water. There were no warning signs at the spigots, and the host did not tell us until we asked (because it was coming out brown). Also there was no dump station, and the host did not know where there were any dump stations in the area. Someone should let the host know where some nearby dump stations are located. Better yet, install a dump station! Its a beautiful campground, although a bit tight. We had to change campsites because the one we reserved was not wide enough for our slideout.
