Campground facilities were the cleanest I've ever seen! The bathrooms and showers were cleaned at least once every day, and were in excellent working order. Our campsite was clean and had everything we needed, and the camp hosts were friendly, informative, and helpful. This is an excellent camping spot if you want to do the hike up to the top of Mt. Mitchell like we did.One tip: be prepared to keep your camp site clean and store all food and scented items in your vehicle due to bear activity in the area. We were given extra warning about this upon check-in. We took it seriously and had no problems with bears though.

Clean, quiet, informative staff on site 24/7. Ice and firewood available. Classes with skilled people are offered and some trail guides will pull campers for specific hikes. Fly fishing was fun as was a hike to the rapids. Beware the bears. I had 1 visitation in 8 days on my vehicle. Keep all food in containers stored in the vehicle. Do not Crack the windows. If you have a hitch basket, place a cover over any equipment due to the potential for wildlife to chew on coolers, etc. Yeti will not keep them out of it, despite their claims. Respect nature because we are in its habitat. It is not evil. It is only instinct and survival.

Great campground all around!

The site had everything I needed and faced a large open field. Directions were clear, access to the trialhead was perfect, and all the costs were extremely fair. Couldn't be happier with this campground.

Black Mountain Campground is a wonderful destination if you want to get away from the busy world. There is absolutely no internet connection. There are no grocery stores nearby so plan accordingly. Most of the campsites are large and pretty private. There is not a bad season to camp at Black Mountain Campground. Spring has flowers, newts and fireflys. Summer has long days, Toe River wading and cool nights. Autumn has color, dry days and cool clear nights. All seasons have hiking trails, fly fishing, lovely nights around a campfire and bears. It's a very good place. Don't mess with the bears. They look slow and not very bright but that is an illusion. They are big, strong, fast, extremely smart and always hungry.

The hosts were great. And the campsite was great but the road in is poor. In fact I was towing my car behind the RV and the PCV valve on the car engine clogged up from all the dust.

This is a really family friendly campground. The bathrooms are clean. The showers are hot. The camp hosts are always fantastic. The short walk to the river is amazing. Not to mention the waterfall, thats a 20 minute hike away from the campground.

Remote, quiet, beautiful, peaceful, & clean. Special thanks to our hostess who recommended some great hiking trails. Our experience was improved 100% because of her.

No cell service at all. Be sure you know where you are going once you hit the gravel road. Theres a u turn in it that could be confusing. Bathrooms and showers were very clean. Hosts were friendly and made sure everyone knew to keep campsites clean to avoid bear issues. Theres a river thats perfect for kids wading and a larger swimming hole too.

This is one of my favorite campgrounds in WNC. Lots of great hiking and cycling accessible. Dip in the South Toe to cool off! Sites are decently graded, with upgraded picnic tables and fire rings. Absolutely NO cell phone signal, so prepare to unplug. Most sites can accommodate two vehicles and two large tents.My only gripe with my recent visit is that the cleanliness of bathrooms has gone downhill since last year. Last year the campground hosts cleaned the bathrooms every morning before anyone woke up and they were immaculate. This year they didn't clean them until mid-morning and they were still pretty gross. I realize this level of service will vary year-to-year as hosts rotate, but I think there needs to be a higher baseline standard.

Beautiful location - but remote.
@Katherine47735 · Camped on Jun 22, 2023 at Campsite #24
Beautiful location with hiking trails right from the campground. Delightfully quiet and peaceful! Camp hosts are friendly and helpful with local area. Directions to the campground entrance could be improved. The area has obviously had more residential development and inadvertent turns in the dark led to the need for backing down roads in the dark with a camper trailer.

Excellent campground to use as a basecamp to hike and explore the area. Facilities were great and campsite was clean.
@ThomasT2893818 · Camped on Jun 2, 2023 at Campsite #35
The bathrooms and showers were excellent! The campground hosts were friendly and most helpful. The camp sites were excellent as they have been for out last 10 visits. Campers from other sites were friendly. We were there to hike to the summit of Mitchell. (8 hours plus; 3500 feet elevation gain...plus) There is one waterfall within walking distance of the campground. There's another not far from the golf course. The South Toe River...a trout stream runs by the campground. Bottom Line: We'll be back!

Overall our 14 day visit was great. Managers and staff were friendly and helpful as always. They made sure all campers were aware of safety protocols and that they were followed. Bathrooms and showers were clean.
@DerrickOFB54BC · Camped on May 22, 2023 at Campsite #21
Great little campground! Only reason for 3 stars was the Forest service had to cut down a tree and I had to break camp, move for couple hours and the set back up. The camp hosts were awesome people through the whole thing.
@MichaelW725874 · Camped on May 5, 2023 at Campsite #35
What a great little campground! Host was friendly and welcoming, campsite and restrooms were clean. The campground itself would be very difficult if at all impossible to get too with a big rig since it winds very steeply with lots of tight switchbacks to get too the site but easily accessible with a small camper or obviously car. Is a bit remote so stock up before going up the mountain to get there. Will definitely be back.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
