We camped in No. 94, one of the nicer spots thats at the end of the loop and has nice view of the lake. Excellent upkeep by the camp host, bathrooms were clean and had easy access to water and garbage. Can easily walk down to the lake shore

The campground itself was good to very good. However, many folks had campfires in defiance of the no campfire rules in place due to the extreme fire danger in the area. The vault toilets were pretty foul, unlike the ones at Waldo Lake which are the model of efficiency. The campground host wasn't seen much, nor did they seem to care if campers ignored the no campfire rules and the no generator hours.The hike up to the obsidian flow was the highlight. Very amazing. The night sky over East Lake was astounding. Got much colder than expected one night, so pack extra blankets and layered clothing for a late August trip.

Great camp ground.

Loved this campground and East Lake. Went over a weekend and was pleasantly surprised at how quiet it was for a basically full campground. Didnt need the host for anything, but our in passing experience with them was very friendly and positive. Only comment, that youll also see on other reviews is regarding the pit toilets, very pungent. Would have been an easy 5 stars if not for those stinkers.

The bathrooms were horribleMaybe the worst we've ever experienced camping.The park was quiet and the neighbors were respectful.Lots of black flies. We did love all the interesting things to do around the area. We won't stay at Cinder Hill again but in the area definitely .

Beautiful campground and area. Wish we could have stayed longer but will be back!

Nice campground, mostly shady, but the bathrooms are in need of repair and upgrade.
@ColleenM947508 · Camped on Jul 1, 2024 at Campsite #99
The campground is lovely, wooded, close to lake edge, has trails right out of it and we will be back! Convenient water spigots, dish draining traps and dumpsters. The bathrooms (some flush, some vault), unfortunately at the campground and most places we went in the newberry caldera monument were insufficient in number, were old and not clean. Bathroom maintenance definitely a downside.

Overall a pleasant stay. Site access for trailers are not optimal as most sites are not very level and sites on interior of loop are extremely difficult to navigate trailer into and unless you go reverse of one way traffic the RV doors are opposite side of camp spot.
@BrianF9020222 · Camped on Jun 18, 2024 at Campsite #28
One of two flush toilets out of order and the nearest outhouse was almost unusable. Other than that, it was fine.

After Labor Day the campground was less full & the weather remained really nice.

Awful spot. So many flies and was tiny. Spot sizes are not consistent.

Cinder Hill is one of our favorite campgrounds and we like to camp in a tent in one of the campsites between numbers 52 and 110 where generator use is restricted to the hours of 10 to 12 and 4 to 6. Unfortunately, people still use generators early in the morning (we were welcomed every morning at breakfast around 8am on our last trip with at least 2 sites running generators). As an added bonus, a group of campers were playing music extremely loudly when we arrived on a Friday night (again in the quiet area of the campground). I am not sure why there are no signs indicating that the campsites have restricted generator use, but in any case no one actually seems to be enforcing the generator use policy. Regardless of the fact that generators can be a scourge on the camping experience for people hoping to leave the city and be in nature, the lakes are amazing for kayaking / sailing, etc. and there are excellent hikes in the area. We will certainly return but wont forget our earplugs which is a shame because we would rather listen to nature than generators or loud music.

SITE # 97: We had a great time at Cinder Hill, really enjoyed the views and beautiful country. But I would like to suggest to the Park managers that it would be good to provide to Recreation.gov a map of the park that includes the directions of the roads in the park. Although the spot we had was big enough for our 28 foot trailer, the way it is configured, there is NO way to get into it unless you drive into it going the wrong way on the one way road. And even then it was not easy at all. Also it would be nice if the site were leveled better. We had our own bathroom facilities so did not use the camp restrooms much, but when I did they were well kept up and clean. It would also be helpful to new arrivals to the park to be provided with a map of the park so that they could find their spot. I will return to Cinder Hill but next time I will be better informed via Google Earth or Google maps to choose a site.

I've been going to East Lake for 51 years for the fishing. Unfortunately, we have not been able to launch our boat for the last 3 years. The water height has made all 4 boat launches unusable and the forestry department is not installing the docks. This is a Federal National Monument and they need to deepen the launches so the resource can be used again and for the future. In my opinion, the "new" Oregon will continue to be very dry and the water levels at East Lake will not recover.

Our stay was 8/10 we went on days that were more cloudy and still enjoyed most of our time at the campsite. the lake from our spot #94 was just down the steep hill the water you could tell was a little far back but we still tried to get in to swim for a little we fished and caught a huge rainbow trout about 14+' but it slipped away this lake is really good for fishing on a boat but not so much from shore, campsite was good there were two premade flat spots perfect for tents we had two 4 person tents and one 3 person tent on the campsite. the site is one of the furthest from the bathrooms and can be tricky to get to at night but the camp ground was fairly empty and having little kids we drove a few times to the bathroom. we had no issues with any large wild life but let me tell you the chipmunks at that lake are something else granted we forgot some food out so to be a little expected but we put away most of our non cold food in our vehicles but these guys got into a whole bag of marshmallows they ate and tore up a whole roll of paper towles and half a package of oreos so beware of the CHIPMUNKS :) also this site has one of the bigger parking lots out of any of them we fit three sedans in our parking spot!!BRING BUG SPRAY FIRE SMOKE HELPED BUT BRING BUG SPRAY FOR SURE!!!!!all in all great experience wish there was more sun when we went but still had a good time would definitely return next year!!

We love East Lake and Cinder Hill.The only negative comment I have is that if you are not going to sell firewood, campers will use fallen tree limbs and feed them into the fire if they dont have an axe. We saw this many times and it was pretty nerve wracking - its dangerous.
@YoungK3730560 · Camped on Jul 24, 2023 at Campsite #74
It'd have been a 5-star review if the previous guest haven't left something (poop) at the campsite. Everything else was wonderful - the lake, tall trees in & around the campground, and enough space between campsites to provide adequate privacy. There were a few mosquitos but wasn't bad at all.
@AmyC3583814 · Camped on Jul 17, 2023 at Campsite #13
Cinder Hill is a lovely campground with a wide variety of sites, and a generous number of FCFS options. There is a lot to do nearby, including a really nice trail which starts inside the campground. I will definitely return.
@JerryP5188052 · Camped on Jul 16, 2023 at Campsite #89
The toilets were the worst I have ever seen. 50 years of camping in Oregon I was never so disgusted. We went looking for the camp host to ask for toilet paper and a broom to help clean and could never find one. We asked other campers if they had seen the host and everyone we asked said they had not seen the host. The natural view was superb but the campground would be a reason to never go back.
@LeAnnC37F2E57E · Camped on Jul 14, 2023 at Campsite #77
Great campground, beautiful scenery, large sites. However, the website says it has flushing toilets, but the entire campground only has vaulted toilets.
@MichelleO16754 · Camped on Jul 11, 2023 at Campsite #28
The bathrooms here are always out of order. They need some major renovations! And the docks were sitting in the parking lots and not in the water. Very disappointing!

We always enjoy Cinder Hill CG. This was our first visit for summer 2023 and it didnt disappoint. The camp hosts were doing a great job, everything seemed neat and clean, probably the best we have ever seen. Site 16 was wonderful! Nice separation/privacy and heavily forested spot. Slight incline to the parking spot, but not bad.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
