Camped here numerous times, one of our favorite campgrounds

Although this campground is next to Hwy 49, the road noise wasn't as obtrusive as I expected it to be. Many of the campsites here have river access directly from them. We had no issues during our stay. The other campers were quiet and respectful. The camp store, a short walk away, offers free Wi-Fi from their parking lot if you need to use your cell phone. Once the campground gets their water system up and running, it will be even more convenient!

Out of all the campgrounds around this area, this is my favorite bc of the easy access to the river, every camp site practically has its own direct entry to the lake. The compost toilets were well kept, better than I expected. We went in late July. Mosquitoes weren't too bad. In the high 80s, water felt cold in our year. Site 5 is a walk-in site. Every site is a different size, a bigger deal if you have a trailer. Camp rangers were always driving in and out, checking things out, felt safe.

We loved this place! Beautiful trees, enough sunlight coming through. Beautiful Tahoe National Forest.

This place is perfect for a quick and light camping trip. Super easy to get to anyone can drive this. The drive is nice and being next to the water was relaxing. The camping spot we reserved had its own river access with no way of any others being able to access or take over. There was a nice little beach area where I spent most of my time at. The bathrooms were stocked. There was running water. Downieville is a short drive away. We had some great food and coffee there. I will definitely come back to this camping spot in the future.

Very nice get away. I could hear Rivet and crickets all night. Stars were amazing

The bathroom was clean. The presence of workers was reassuring. The overall experience did not disappoint and I plan on camping at Carlton next year.

Arrived right after a rain storm, and though things were a bit damp, the campsite was fine. Bathrooms were clean and there was plenty of to toilet paper. The river was wonderful as usual. The rangers were very helpful in answering some questions, and said it was o.k. to move to an unoccupied space...

No maintenance done at all. They charge $24 a day and they dont even clean the Porta potty except for once per week on Mondays. Every site said reserved but for the entire week that we were there not one other person showed up in any of the other spots that we wanted. Kinda fishy. What is the purpose of closing down 95% of the spots? Doesnt make sense. this is been happening for a couple of years now.

Lovely spot.

Nearby campers were playing loud music throughout the day and into the evening. Otherwise, nice enough. The pit toilets are old but seem well taken care of. They didn’t stink!

It was very nice up there. Stayed in campground 9. Seen a rattlesnake under the table in the campgrounds and there were no rattlesnake signs was my only issue. Other than that it was a great camping trip.

This was such an epic place to camp. Right on the river. Most camp spots have a little brush separating each other. Will be staying here again. Thanks!

It's a glorious campground, right on the river. When we visited there was no camp host, no rangers, basically no oversight; which was a problem when we found our site occupied by campers who refused to leave. That super sucked.

We ended up camping at Union Valley. Union Valley Campground had 8 sites reserved for multiple night over the entire weekend and not one had someone camping at the site. This has happened to me now 3+ times where I originally wanted to reserve a site at Union Valley but “on line” booking had none available. Then we get there and all are reserved, but none have people camping. I was unable to cancel my spot at Carlton because of lack of cel service in the area, so I guess that makes me a part of the problem. Regardless, it’s a real shame to see all these spots unavailable to book then empty when you go check. Gotta be a better way, maybe 1/2 booking on line and the rest show up and camp? I do t know the answer but overall it makes for a frustrating experience. On another note, Union valley camp ground was clean, safe and beautiful !! Can’t wait to go back, if I can book a f-ing site!!

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
