Old Rag Mountain and Mary's Rock are two of the must-do hikes at the Shenandoah National Park.

Great campground. Only inconvenience was the wood pricing and availability.

Big Meadows Campground in Shenandoah National Park was a lovely place to spend the weekend camping in the late fall. The campground was quiet, well maintained, and the staff were friendly and professional. Hikes on the trails had just the right balance of fellow hikers, wildlife, and gorgeous vistas. We really appreciated the WIFI at the visitor's center as cell reception is spotty at the campsites and we had a granddaughter with a birthday who needed to be serenaded with the birthday song!

Great hiking on the AT and the trail to Ripidan Camp.

Nice space, close to bathroom. Clean. Easy access location after a long day hiking. Too bad no trees for hammocks.

Great location overall! Lots of sites, which is a plus and a minus. Bathhouse was clean. Deer EVERYWHERE, but didn't bother us or our dogs. Plenty of wood available for purchase, although $10 per bundle seems pricey.

Great park, clean facilities, easy access to trails and parks. Large pull through sights. We will definitely be back!

Walk-in sites are spaced well from each other, but near enough to the restrooms that were clean. A couple RVs ran generators, but they shut down after dinner time. Very quiet and peaceful campground. Elevation and weather made it perfect for virtually no condensation on the tent and no sign of mosquitos or other biting bugs when we were there.

The staff was friendly. The bathrooms and showers were clean. Excellent location in the park.

Nice campground and not many campers at this time of year (early Nov). I was dry camping on site D144, which was pretty level and spacious. Many good hikes from campground including part of the Appalachian trail. Can walk to visitor center from campground. Internet is woefully missing. Walked to the amphitheater to make a call and experienced drop calls. Showers cost $5.00, which I thought was pricey and the water was warm at best. Only 1 dump site, which could be a problem when campground is full. Very beautiful park.

Climate change has shifted the seasons--my visit in November was blessed with warm summery weather along with fewer crowds. I also appreciate the clean, smoke-free air that made this month an ideal time to visit. Don't forget to thank all the friendly folk of the National Park Service!

Stayed here election night. Restrooms are heated and clean. Campground was in great shape, even with leaves falling constantly.

Cell service was reported to be available at the Amphitheater at Big Meadows Campground. We found it very spotty and intermittent (Verizon). Other than that, a lovely campground and location. Facilities (Lodge, Showers, Laundry) Buildings, in general, seemed in need of a little TLC. Can't argue with location and views :).

This is a rather older campground. Positives are location, of course. Negatives are neglect, especially the roadways within the campground and some rather sizable potholes that could cause serious damage to tires, and pose a trip/fall hazard to walkers. Some sites are level, others, not so much.The showers are run by a concessionaire and cost $5 for 10 minutes, but take quarters. Minimal signage about the cost doesnt help. We ended up giving up and driving to a truck stop for a far better shower experience for similar cost. The NPS might do well to have the Army Corps of Engineers run its campgrounds, as theirs are so much nicer.

Outstanding national park and campground

First Off buy wood elsewhere. The wood was wet and they know it based upon the conversation when I told them I went through 11 bundles for a two night stay and it was near impossible to start and keep going every time. This spot is close to the road and other sites. Also closest to Appalachian trail. Lots of people walking by. But also wildlife walking by. A six point buck walked up and stopped opposite the fire posing for the Christmas card! And a doe 20 minutes later. Otherwise it was good too.

Although sometimes crowded on Skyline Dr , the campgrounds are great. Lots of deer in early morning and late afternoon. Bathrooms are clean and warm. Nearby Wayside was crowded but service was good and fast.

Big Meadows is just an outstanding place to experience the Blue Ridge. An advantage of visiting late autumn through spring is that as the trees shed their leaves the views from within the campground open up. We live a little over an hour away and visit several times per year. We're pretty keen on our hack for arriving late - just go to the lodge, have a cocktail while viewing the sunset from the deck, and get dinner in the restaurant. We'll be virtuous and cook the rest of the weekend.Plenty of hiking opportunities and the rangers can help you sort out what's right for you. We've enjoyed Rose River / Dark Hollows fall loop, and the Rapidan Camp loop. We also really enjoyed the Byrd Visitor Center's exhibit on the history of the park. We usually wrap up the weekend by catching a hike somewhere down Skyline drive on our way home.Note that cell phone service is spotty throughout the park. We view this as a feature not a bug. You can get WiFi service at the lodges and visitor center for those last minute All Trails downloads.

Big Meadows was a wonderful campground. Very clean and felt safe each night. The showers and bathrooms were excellent. Friendly staff. We had the burgers at the Wayside and they were excellent! We had deer eat berries while we drank our coffee. We will be back!

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
