What a hidden little gem! There is a parking area just down the road from the campground entrance trail. Shuttle services for your gear are usually available but we just carried our gear. The campsites surround this beautiful lake situated in the middle of a forest. The campsites aren't secluded from the trail but they are from other campsites. There was only one other site taken while we were there so it was extremely peaceful and serene. We will absolutely be returning!

Don't recommend site 19. People were walking through our site constantly to access the lake.

Totally loved this delightful lake. Well worth the 7 hour drive from California. for a 3 night stay The lake is gorgeous. Just about the right size. Surrounded by pine-covered hills. The campsite are spaced out in a way that makes things more private. There is no water (but you can bring it in). The bathrooms are fine. We found the host Jonathan to be the most friendly and helpful host we ever met. I don't know if the other reviews were talking about a different person but Jonathan is da man! Portage is a necessity ($25 each way) unless you are at the campsite closed to the road. The sites are great and so close to the water. We had site #12 which was great. #11 and #13 are great sites as well. #14 had a swinging rope close by that was a lot of fun to play with. Bring your canoes, tubes and SUP boards. There are fish and turtles and no bears in sight during our stay. The water was so warm but it was a warm weekend. Totally a place to come back to.

The place is beautiful as always but, way to expensive. The drinking water has been broken for a couple years, the toilets were in decent shape at best, and they wanted to charge me for parking as well even though it is supposed to come with the campground fee. The new management is charging almost double the price now and doing way less to improve it.

We loved Acorn Woman lakes! There is a long walk to most of the sites so hauling stuff is hard or you can pay the portage fee which is $25. Site 16 actually has access from the road so you have a MUCH shorter walk to unload your stuff. The site isn't right on the water like some of the others which was better for us with little kids, but the water was still easily accessible. Also a bit buggier than the sites right on the water, but not bad. The pit toilet was a bit of a walk as well, but not terrible. Overall this was a great site for us and we will for sure be back!

Great spot. Mornings can be ruined by very loud logging trucks coming in and out every weekday morning.

Beautiful spot, very quiet and secluded. Only complaint is not being able to drive to your camping spot, but I understand why you cant
@ErichG7391224 · Camped on Jul 9, 2023 at Campsite #13
It's more like a half mile hike from parking lot. Also has steep terrain so don't bring a lot of stuff. Mosquitoes are brutal too.

I love this location, but this summer (2023) was a shock. So many trees were down, within sites. The site I always stay in was almost beyond recognition. The path to the water was impassable because a large tree completely cover it and the little beach that had always been there for water access and kayak parking was gone. The bushes that gave this site privacy from the lake were so much lower that there was no longer that privacy. Knowing the site well, it felt decimated. I know this is a LOT to take are of a wild place like this, but it did not seem as maintained as in the past. To do so would need help from beyond the location. The new hosts were sweet and helpful.

Love the site. Disappointed in the increasing lack of hospitality at the site. Having the water pump out of use for the season means they’re now hocking large plastic jugs of water. Add to that the $25/trip ferrying, and not delivering firewood if you pay for it at the camp host, it’s no longer an affordable family trip.

This is one of the most calming and quiet lakes in the region. I love that no motors are allowed on the lake. The campsites are SO private and are worth the walk in. I could learn to travel light, but usually make a trip by land with a wagon and then another trip with gear on my paddleboard and that usually does the trick. Our kids brough bikes and everyone fully enjoyed paddling, swimming, biking and hiking because there is no cell service and no devices! It was such a nice way to unplug and spend tie with nature, family and friends.

Had a ton of fun at the lakes— the big lake seemed to have the best swimming spots, but both lakes were fun to fish at. Campsites further from the water (such as site 17 which we were at) seemed to have a much higher population of mosquitos than the sites and areas right on the lake itself. The overall biggest hassle for us was that although we knew we’d have to hike into the campsite, we didn’t know it would be so steep, so it was difficult to pack everything down even with a wagon because we couldn’t load it very full or it would tip or shake things out because of the rough terrain. I also had to look around for the campground map since I didn’t see it on the main page or reservation pages for squaw lakes. It’s easy enough to find though, and really helpful to have on hand when you’re at the campground trying to find a bathroom or a water pump. Parking descriptions are also a little ambiguous, but we found some spots along the road that seemed to be pullouts meant for our specific campsite and were able to keep our cars there for the duration of our stay so that was really nice. Of course this would mainly apply to campsites that are actually along the road. All in all it was a fun trip and we plan to return in the future even though we had a rough time in the beginning trying to find things and pack everything in. Once we were set up though, it was pretty relaxing! There is plenty to do especially as long as you don’t mind getting a little (or a lot) dirty while you’re there!

I'm not upset about the smoke from the fire. I tried to cancel the remainder of the reservations for all 4 of the campsites I paid for and have received no call back. I was also not allowed to cancel my reservations on the app, and am considering deleting the app and never using anything associated with it again.

Lake and grounds beautiful as always. Host dude was unfriendly and seemed very put out just to do his job (portage and firewood). Conveniently never had change for firewood and portage. Not giving campers the opportunity to tip based on good service. This ultimately cost him at least $50, as we like to tip generously for good service, when given the choice. Time for this host to move along. Past hosts, much better and friendlier. We will keep coming to Squaw Lakes because it is awesome! However, we will pack light and avoid portage, at least until the current (summer 2022) host is gone. He’s lazy and unfriendly/borderline hostile. I wonder if he’s reporting all his cash portage and firewood “earnings” to his supervisors and/or the IRS (probably between $25-30k in 3 months). If you are thinking of camping at Squaw Lakes, do it. It’s amazing! Just pack light so you don’t have to bother the host for 20 minutes of his time for $50 (or $60 because he “doesn’t have change”).

Rating the lake itself was Excellent. Rating the camp host: they were helpful and for this I am grateful, however we weren’t informed until arriving that the only option for exit portage was to wait until after the host returned from town errands after 3pm-ish. This information would have been best conveyed prior to our arrival so that we could plan accordingly.

Lots of rattlesnakes in the camp area.

The hosts are very friendly and helpful. The lake is beautiful! The complaints I have are that someone (Forest Service?) had fallen two large trees in the area to the lake where the kids normally swim, and where we launch our boats. Lots of debris in that area. Also, previous camper had left large empty box and garbage by the fire pit.

Site 19: Our (1) trash can for the 15 people group site had trash in it when we got there, and it was never emptied during our four-day stay. We could tell there are bears in the area because the trash can lid has a bite taken out of it. We saw a host a couple of times, but they never said anything to us. Had we had an opportunity to speak to them, we would've asked about the trash. We figured they would've taken care of it at least after a couple of days. Throughout our stay, we had multiple people try to park in our parking spot and walk through our campsite to access the lake, instead of using (and paying for) $5 day-use parking. 18-wheelers come through periodically, sometimes early in the morning. If someone is parked where they shouldn't be, it will be abundantly clear to you and everyone at the lake. The picnic tables are in need of upkeep. No bearproof food locker at this site, but neighboring sites have them. Great view of the lake, decent access. Great spot for a group with multiple tent spaces

AVOID this location at all costs. THE SINGLE WORST CAMPING EXPERIENCE EVER AND OUR ONLY BAD 1 ALL SUMMER. CAMP HOSTS WERE HOSTILE AND PUT OUR PARTY IN DANGER!!!!!! HOSTS WERE MORE INTERESTED IN DOING DRUGS AND NAPPING THAN ACTUALLY HELPING GUESTS TO THE PARK. HOST WAS LITERALLY DOING DRUGS IN FRONT OF OUR CHILDREN AND REFUSED TO ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT WHERE OUR CAMPSITE ACTUALLY WAS. WE HIKED 2 MILES IN & OUT WHILE CARRYING SEVERAL POUNDS OF GEAR EACH TO FIND WE HAD NO SITE AT THE LAKE. HAD TO HIKE BACK TO HOST SITE AND YELL HELLO SEVERAL TIMES AND STILL NO HELP. HAD TO SCREAM MY FAMILY NEEDS HELP TO GET THE HOST TO QUIT DOING DRUGS WITH HER FRIENDS AND RUN OVER. THEN THEY WERE MAD AT US FOR BEING LOST AND NEEDING THEIR HELP. WE HAD 2 KIDS PACKING FOOD AND BEHIND ON THE TRAILS WITH DANGER BEARS SIGNS ALL OVER. THE HOSTS WERE HOSTILE THREATENED TO FIGHT US AND SCREAMED OBSCENITIES AT US AS WE SEARCHED FOR OUR CHILDREN & LEFT IN THE DARKNESS. THEY HAD A QUAD AND LIGHTS AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. 2 HOUR + DRIVE HOME DURING WHICH 1 OF THE TEENS HIT A DEER AND RUINED HER CAR. HAD TO DRIVE TO RECEPTION AND CALL TOW. GOT HOME AT 2AM AND NO CAMPING. AVOID AVOID AVOID HORRIBLE LOCATION AND WORST HOSTS EVER IN THE HISTORY OF HOSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
