Camping out at Chuchupate campgrounds in Frazier Park, California was an exhilarating experience. The experience fulfilled a lifetime bucket list endeavor. I camped out by myself and the drive from the entrance of the uphill campground was very pleasant as I admired the beautiful green and forest around me. The road was a bit treacherous and I encountered a few manageable potholes. The challenging drive up the hills kept me alert and cautious as I had to drive very slow to stay safe on the very narrow single road. When I arrived at my designated spot I was captivated by a very delicious sweet floral aroma that touched the bottom of the most perfect tall pine trees. Some of the most prettiest trees, wild birds and butterflies that roamed the area, accompanied me on this lovely summer day. I was so delighted to be there. I saw no trash or disturbing waste that may be encountered on camping grounds. The happy sound of those crisp green trees made a most pleasant breeze that allowed me to stay cool on a hot and humid 4th of July day. After I set up my camping gear, I enjoyed the fire pit that lasted and kept me warm throughout the night. I enjoyed the starry sky when the lights went out and the sun set behind the mountains. I had a good nights rest. In the morning when I woke up I enjoyed the large picnic table provided and I brewed fresh coffee and an outdoor breakfast that i cooked on my portable stove. I had the best time. As I write this I can almost smell the fresh flowers and the crisp aroma from those pine trees. I will cherish this day forever.

We stayed in Site 21. There is ample space between sites but no shade in ours. We were 2 spots away from the vault toilet with no problem. We would select another spot next time with trees for shade but this one wasn't terrible with our bug canopy. Pros: The campground itself is spacious and peaceful. Daytimes were in the 90's-100 but evenings were a perfect temp for light summer sleeping bags. Campfires were allowed in the ring. On our stay we saw a double rainbow and just caught the tail end of a thunderstorm with a light rain. Vault toilets were pretty clean and always had paper. The camp site signs were updated daily with clearly marked placards or envelopes to indicate reserved or available. All the campers were courteous and quiet both during day and quiet hours. Two cute loops were great for walking our dog. There are several well stocked market and liquor stores at the base of the mountain for all supplies. We also visited Fort Tejon which was a fun trip for the kids if you like historic sites, and we also escaped the heat at the Tejon Outlets which are pet friendly and air conditioned. Cons: The site map has been down so we didn't know what the map of the campground lay out until we drove through. Areas on the road need a lot of work. My small hybrid made it past all the potholes. There are narrow roads but a few turnabouts. Wildlife: bring Insect traps for flies and yellow jackets if you want to feel privacy and comfort while cooking and eating. We went down the mountain to a Walmart 30 min away to purchase a bug net gazebo. Also beware there are some weed that leave VERY tiny spines in your skin that prick you and feel like an invisible shard of glass. My dog had some larger, spiny weeds caught in his fur as well. Ground is rocky. We were happy to have air mattresses and pads in the tents.

Great area with plenty of space at each campsite for a few tents/tables. It was a really nice place to just get away from the city for a while.

Overall good experience here. Only problem was the smell of the toilets, next time will try to be upwind of them, will be easier once a map of the site is uploaded. It wasnt horrible but definitely nose wrinkling. Never used them ourselves, brought a Luggable Loo and some spare bags. Fair amount of trees for some of the sites and was able to set up a hammock between two of them at our site. No cell service for Verizon and T-Mobile once rounding the last switchback made for a peaceful time. Left for the day and went to Mt. Pinos for a hike, no issues upon return, site undisturbed. No firewood available onsite, but you can get it at Mike's Pizza Company general store down the road from the Chuchupate ranger station. Lots of good stuff to buy as well, got some chips and dip on the way home. Will definitely be back to the area for another Mt. Pinos hike.

Overall good experience. Wish there were more trees. Seems to be many or most spots don't have shade and it can be quite hot in the summer. The only other downer was the smell of the vault toilets as the breeze picks up headed your way but that only happened one of the two afternoons we were there. (We were in spot #22)

This place is such a hidden small gem. It’s beautiful. And going in the middle of summer it was still very cool weather and lots of trees to get away from the sun.

The camp sites are nicely spread out, and the campground is in a very nice setting. It was very hot when we visited in July, and I could have done with more shade, but that was mostly due to the site I selected -- there were plenty of shady sites. There were some bugs but nothing I considered a problem. The fire pits were very nice, new double-walled units with two grates. The worst part of this campground was the vault toilets. I'm no stranger to primitive campsites and not easily put off, but these were old, dark (even during daylight), and inadequately ventilated. The ammonia smell inside was very strong, almost eye-watering. The road in was heavily potholed, but nothing a typical passenger car couldn't handle if driven carefully.

Chuchupate is in a beautiful area and the campsites are a good size. When I was there last, summer '19, the campground was, unfortunately, in a poor state of repair. The vault bathrooms are broken down to the point you shouldn't count on using them. The water system appears to have been out of commission for a long time so be sure to bring your own water. It looks like they were able to go through and repair/replace some of the picnic tables which is good. If you're okay with a pack-it-in/pack-it-out campground, this is a beautiful spot!

Great campground for peace and quiet. Didn’t see a ranger, so at times it felt a little unsafe. Altogether, it’s worth going to!

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
