Great cabin with lots of space and sleeping areas. Love the back area with large fire put and picnic tables. Went I. The winter and the walk from the parking area was very short and easy to do.

Loved this cabin, we were there on a chilly weekend and the stove was perfect to cozy us up after outside adventures. There is definitely a pack-rat in the ceiling who is very active at night, and mice in the walls, but they kept to themselves.

We had a great time! This is a nice, clean cabin. There were no signs of rodents on the main floor to the cabin. There is a packrat that is nocturnal and lives in the attic (it didnt bother us at all though). The creek is right in the backyard and there is a ton of land to explore no matter what season you visit. The walk/ski in is flat and only .36 miles according to our GPS. Heads up for next guests - the Coleman stove is not usable - someone melted the knobs to the stove. We just used the wood stove though so no problem for us :)

Cabin is in a cool spot and easy to access. The half mile ski in is flat and short. The cabin is old and showing signs of wear. There were a couple windows boarded up and its drafty and there is a packrat eating the ceiling above the kitchen. The wood stove took a few hours to heat up the place. The room off the kitchen stayed very cold but we also kept the door closed to heat the place quicker. I think it would be very tight with 11 people in the winter but lots of room outside to spread out in the summer and cool creek out back. Lots of xc skiing options right from the cabin.

The cabin was clean, well-stocked with firewood, beautifully located, and generally enjoyable. ONE SUGGESTION: the USFS materials should have mentioned that the combination lock is on the back door, and that entrance to the cabin yard is via the small front gate rather than the large vehicle gate--that larger, locked vehicle-entry gate being the first entrance that a visitor encounters on the road. We arrived after dark, saw the first gate--which we naturally assumed would be the entry (the 2nd, smaller gate wasn't visible in our headlights)--and were disconcerted to find it locked. Also, on reaching the front door and finding in key-locked, we spent some time searching for a lockbox--thinking that our combination might be to a lockbox with a key in it. After a bit, of course, we did go around to the back, which is combination-locked. Still, things would have been smoother if we'd been informed about the 2 gates, and the back door being our entry.

What a beautiful cabin in a very nice setting. The USFS has done a lot to keep it clean, in great shape and solid. As of today, there are a few windows that are plywooded up because they are being restored. When that is finished it will be amazing. Just fyi, the kitchen supplies are very limited, no knives, forks, or spoons and crappy cookware. So bring your own setups. We bought a nice skillet and donated it to the cabin, so hopefully it will stay there. The wood stove is awesome. Also, this cabin sits directly on Big Creek Road and it dead ends, but there are lots of hunters and hikers driving up and down the road and its close to the Mountain Sky Ranch. It was pretty mellow for the most part, but I only mention this because it might be an issue for some people. There are 11 mattresses in the cabin. Its a great spot, great hiking nearby and fishing and close to Yellowstone. If you need supplies, buy them in Livingston as Gardiner is a total hole in the wall with very limited options. Theres also the Sinclair in Emigrant which is fantastic.

We've stayed at Big Creek Cabin every year for the last 13 years. It's spacious, clean and fun! We fish in the creek (when the water isn't running too fast), hike most every day, cook fantastic meals over the outside fire pit, play board games and just relax!!! Great place to do so!

Such a cool spot! Went here in the Winter, parked and snowmobiled in. Had a great time with family and friends. Plenty of bunk beds, table space. We didn’t spend a lot of time outside, because it was so cold. One person in our party went cross country skiing. Cozy cabin, would definitely return.

We loved our stay at Big Creek! The trail in was pretty well packed and did not require skis for the 1/4 mile or so walk to the cabin. Be aware there was only one pot and one large pan for cooking food. We are accustomed to the huge variety of cooking and kitchen stuff brought into cabins and this one was definitely spare. That said, this was by far and away the cleanest cabin I have ever stayed in! Definitely will be returning! Also suggest whomever goes in next brings along an extra set of sock-style propane lantern mantles- we replaced the ones that were there but there with our own.

Excellent cabin with two wood fired stoves (one for heating and one for cooking) and lots of wood provided by the forest service.

This cabin was fabulous! We had no trouble keeping it warm as long as we kept the fire stoked. We enjoyed sitting on the porch enjoying the morning sun. The road can get a little juicy, take your time and watch for oncoming traffic and watch for wildlife! We were lucky enough to have a mountain lion run in front of us on the road for about 20 feet. We only hiked up the road but next time want to spend more time investigating the trails. A truly wonderful experience and won't hesitate to book another week!!

Mothers Day 2021....
Had a Great time at the Big Creek Cabin!!! Being located so near to Chico Hot Springs in Pray,MT. it offers an inexpensive alternative to staying at the resort while being able to camp in the woods only 15-25min away. I would recommend this cabin for any larger groups & we are looking forward to returning after the upcoming renovations. There is a road directly in front of the cabin & we had several hunters walking past (spring bear hunt) but no problems there. The drive in was beautiful & the road was manageable without 4wh. drive, but would recommend it if conditions were wet or snowy. The road gate was locked (prior to May 15th) but it's a SHORT 5min walk to the cabin from the parking lot there. Big Creek is about 50ft. from the back porch where we did some awesome rockhounding, had a nice fire with light snow flurries flying. This cabin does offer a large wood burning oven in a separate kitchen which would be ideal in inclement weather, but we were still able to cook outdoors on the provided camp fire/cook ring near the creek. Thank You U.S.F.S., We will be back !!!

The cabin is great! unfortunately when we visited it was really cold, when we got there it was -9F and it stayed very cold, the rest of the stay. The wood stove works well, but we didn't do as much outside as we had liked. Lovely spot. We will come back later when is warmer.

Cabin was well-cared-for and supplied with plenty of wood for chilly nights. There was a very deep puddle (3ft deep) just before the cabin, so high clearance is a good idea. Enjoy!

We have been enjoying the Big Creek cabin and many of the other cabins around the state for the past 27 years!! Sadly they've become so popular they are so very, very hard to book! We are very thankful that we were able to go during this unfortunate time in the world's history!! We left it cleaner than we found it and hopefully that trend will continue!! Looking forward to visiting this beautiful place again, hopefully next year!! Sorry to see that people have abused the privilege of having easy access to wood for a fire by stealing it!! All our best, Stacy, Paul, Jo Barb, Josh and Sarah

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
