Amazing location!

The cabin has one of the most beautiful views of any forest service cabin in Montana that I've experienced to date. There seemed to be a lot of mouse activity, but I know that is expected for a cabin in the woods. The mattresses are some of the best (supportive and comfortable) I've ever slept on in a cabin as well. That was amazing. There was plenty of wood and the stove put out a great amount of heat. The flies were pretty bad during the day but must have retreated into the logs at night. There was no toilet paper when we arrived, but luckily we had brought our own, so bring toilet paper if going to this cabin. Overall magical and I would go again if I'm lucky enough to be able to book it again. Very tough to book, for good reason. It would also be very tight in there with more than three people, so keep that in mind, especially in the winter when you can't spread out outside as much on the deck, which is another incredible feature of that cabin.

Love this cabin and have stayed many times. Unfortunately it's now infested with mice. Hopefully this year's renovation will help

Very nice place. The wood stove heats it up nicely. Watch out for icy spots! Saw one mouse run across the floor. Overall good stay.

We enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day at Maxey. The trail going in was packed enough that we could easily pull sleds with supplies. Going out the next day it was snowing heavily and windy, with poor visibility and drifts across the trail. We were prepared and snow shoes came in handy. We noted that the cabin will be closed for a while this spring/summer for some work. Probably a good thing, as there are some cracks in the caulking and a leak in the over-hang by the door going in, which creates an icey patch. On a couple of occasions we have found personal belongings that have fallen under the bunks. We took a vest with a pair of headlights to the Forest Service office in case someone wants to claim them. All in all, another great trip to Maxey. This cabin is a gem, please take good care of it.

The weekend getaway to this quaint cabin was just what the doctor ordered. No service, endless skiing and mountain views all around... what more could you want! The ski in was easy and less than a mile. The weather conditions allowed for walking in if that's more your speed. We were greeted with a clean cabin and plenty of wood that kept us extra toasty all weekend. The were dishes for cooking, nothing special but does the job, Hand sanitizer and lysol wipes for staying clean. The pit toilet was clean but thank goodness we brought tee pee because there was none. Other than that our stay was quiet, joyful and we will definitely be back. If you plan to adventure to the Maxey cabin you won't regret it and I hope you say yes to the adventure. If you go be sure to bring toilet paper, water and a light source! Enjoy!

Had a great stay at Maxey Cabin! Love the double doors that open onto the deck and the views, the yard swing, and the nice bathroom! We parked at the pullout off the paved road and walked in -- even with way overpacking for one night it was not too far to just load up and carry all our stuff in one go. This cabin has the least pans/utensils/dishes that I've seen amongst FS cabins so we were glad we brought our own cast iron and dishes.

Great experience! There was a mouse living there that outsmarted all the traps. Can’t wait to come back!

The view can't be beat, and the little stream provides endless play for kids while at the cabin. Bring your bear spray - we saw a black bear within 1/2 mile of the cabin on our latest visit.

Early season conditions prevented us from driving to the cabin. Hiked in the next even for a lovely dinner picnic

Previous renter left a good wood supply. Weather was sub-zero, so it took the stove awhile to heat up the cabin, but once warm, it was easy to keep it cozy.

We have stayed several times at Maxey and it's awesome!. This time we did find a shortage of tissue in the outhouse; fortunately we had brought extra supplies. While we were there some skiers with their dog stopped on the trail that runs through the meadow below and after a few minutes decided to make their way up to the cabin. They told us they didn't think anyone was there, although smoke was coming from the chimney. They asked if they could eat their lunch at the pic-nic table and they were friendly enough so we said no problem (what else were we going to say?). While they were there they used the outhouse, which put a dent in our meager supplies and may explain why the usual ample supply of tissue was lacking. I suspect skiers know it is there and use it regularly. Anyway, I don't know how to remedy this. It's not that we're antisocial; we just weren't expecting company and were enjoying our solitude..

This cabin is mediocre at best with blah vistas and basically no charm... book elsewhere so we can live here all winter! To pick a high point in recent years...3am visit by a very vocal playful group of coyotes running ski trails, surrounding cabin, and hooting it up in snowy meadow...awesome.

We had a fabulous time. As children my Grandfather owned this cabin and we spent years spending summers at the cabin.

Awesome deck to watch the stars and the mountains. Outhouse is made of cinder blocks and is super clean. A little stream runs through the property which was fun for the kids and dogs. The road up can be a rough ride, but it's not too long. Highly recommended.

Our 7 year-old daughter talks about our trip to Maxey Cabin six months ago. Beautiful views. Great trails for hiking surround the cabin and it's a short drive to lake, which has more trails and is great for paddleboarding.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
