This was my second visit to the midway campground. The first visit was wonderful so I wanted to return while my son was visiting. No problems getting a site like before so I was a little surprised. When I arrived at the campground, the place was deserted! There was no camp host - and maybe just a couple of RVs inside. I realize this is summer and camping in Florida in the middle of summer is not everyone's cup of tea. Then why charge reservation fees when you do not provide any amenities? The grass was uncut - the whole place was filled with weeds and most of the sites were unusable because of the bugs and overgrown vegetation. There was waterlogging at most of the sites which made the Even then we were okay since we could pick another site (our reserved site was unusable - there was a huge hornet nest right on the picnic bench!) - but the bathrooms were closed and locked, no water and just a handwritten sign saying "Use bathrooms at Oasis visitor center" - which is a 2.5 mile drive. So every time we needed to use the bathroom we had to leave our gear, tent and bikes at the site unprotected and drive 2.5 miles to use the restroom.If no amenities will be provided, shouldn't that be specified at the campsite and in the reservation page so we could be appropriately prepared? Sadly, this hurt our view of this campground after this trip.I recommend not camping here during the summer months (not sure when that starts though in Floda since it is pretty much warm all the time :)But if you are going to camp, and not use an RV, check to make sure the place will have the amenities.

Horrible zero maintenance, dirty bathrooms and to top it off they closed them.super run down and disgusting bathrooms.It is a beautiful place with a lot of nature. I hope you give it love and maintenance.I have never had any complaints from other campgrounds I have visited

Terrible place. No help in person or on the phone. Sewer drain under water. Potable water very sketchy. Mosquitos will carry you away in the sunshine. Only stayed one night and had to forfeit the rest of the reservation. Edit to Review: You can file a refund request on Recreation.gov after the reservation ends! I didnt expect to hear anything but just got notice of refund over a month later. Thank you!

The campground was clean and quiet. There was no camp host on duty. The mosquitoes were not terrible.
@DanielR3951934 · Camped on Jun 10, 2024 at Campsite #1
So many mosquitoes we needed a transfusion afterwards. Our fault for thinking we could come to Everglades in summer. But BE WARNED! Unless you like clouds of hundreds of tiny vampires come in the winter!

This is a quiet campground. Has power to sites. No water or sewer at site. Water available near dump station. The most surprising is no bath houses.

I booked on the phone at 10pm! I waited only 2 minutes to be connected to a specialist. Great job! The huge pluses are the campground has restrooms, low cost for those traveling by RV or tent. There is electricity and the grounds are very clean and well maintained. There was plenty to do at Big Cypress the next day, so would have stayed another night, but the route took us to another campground.

Very well kept and clean. The sites were level, had some shade, and plenty of room between sites.

I am from South Florida so this camsite for me is just a quick getaway and essentially...do nothing..ok read a book listen to music, meet fellow campers and essentially have some me time. I am there alone! If you want to fish walk across the road from the campsite, Careful for gators there. . It can also be daunting with traffic wizzing by! Most times you will catch Oscars which I have learnt are invasive and I have seen fishermen toss their catch across the street for the birds rather than returning them to the canal. I have only seen baby gators at the Midway lake. The sites on the west end will accomodate larger type campers unlike sites in the twenties which have low tree canopies. I particularly like sites 21-25 as they provide some shade. For campers wanting to tent I would go to Monument lake , just a few minutes west on US41 from Midway ( Keep in mind Monument Lake is seasonal unlike Midway) Reason is that they have toilets and showers. Also that campground is recessed in from the main road (US41) and is much quieter. Midway , unlike Monument lake has covered picnic areas . A great place to visit is the Oasis Visitors Center which is less than 5 minutes drive west of Midway. There is a catwalk there and lots of gator sightings. There aren't any showers at Midway ( I understand the park system is looking to upgrade, fingers crossed) and the restrooms are well kept. The only lights at nights are the lights from the restrooms. Three times around the campground is about a mile. My stay at Midway is usually in the months of Feb -Apr. Once the rainy season starts mid May onwards, the mosquitoes will eat you alive. I have stayed at Midway more than six times now and all the hosts( they are volunteers) , have been very nice. Towards the end of winter though, don't expext to see any.

Clean, well maintained campground. This was a 1 night stopover on my way from Everglades to Miami to fish with my kayak. I read reviews that it was noisy from the road near by but it slowed down after 10 Pm and I had no issues getting to sleep. After 3 days in the Everglades with water we carried and a port-o-potty it was nice to have an actual bathroom that was impeccable. This would be a great site to be able to venture and visit other areas of Big Cypress. I also got a chance to visit Clyde Butcher gallery just down the street -Bonus!

The Campground volunteers are impeccable as to keeping the grounds good and the campers satisfied. Troy does an awesome job. Cant wait to see him next year.

Need to have turnouts when backing into a site. As long as weve come down I say the same thing as everyone else does but this will be our last time here when it rains we have to drive thru mud. Not no more. Change it

The location is perfect for exploring many Everglades offerings, from visitor centers to nearby airboat tours and boardwalks. VERY well maintained lawns and sites. Biggest bummer is the bathhouse is toilets only, no showers. Also, our site had a BBQ and the site over had a fire pit; we wouldve loved the fire pit instead! But we had a portable one we could use. VERY nice sites with paved pads and electricity. We were concerned about the central pond and mosquitoes. They hit hard and fast right at dusk, so be prepared (we love eating outside, and the mosquitoes feasted well, too - haha!). Definitely would use this campground again.

We tent camped in the primitive area, mid March. No privacy and if you have trouble with loud neighbors it can be tough. Also, the campground is next to the road so the vehicles can get loud as they drive by. Mosquitos weren't too bad for us but they were there. A little bug spray was enough. Centrally located to all the parks, boat ramps, vistor's centers in the area's national parks. The hosts were nice and helpful, especially the maintenance guy. Fishing in the pond had a few bluegill, not much other than that. The canal across the street, had too many gators to fish. They kept chasing the topwater :) In the park, we saw cat birds, cardinals, fox squirrels, night herons, barred owls, lubber grasshoppers, and white eyed vireos. At night, the stars were beautiful. Would come on a new moon next time to really see some stars. Overall, a nice trip!

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
