Campground was very nice and clean. It was what I expected. I took the nature trail from the campground to watch the sunset. I also did the hot springs area. It was very nice even if the temp was 109.

My review is of the campground and area itself, as the heat was absolutely terrible and made sleeping impossible. The campground itself is excellent. Very nice nature trail and shop, with cold water available at the nearby ranger station. The stars were excellent at night. There were wild coyotes and javelinas around the campground at night and early morning, so caution is advised.

My wife and I went to Rio Grande Village because it was the only campground in Big Bend we could book. We tried for over a month. I did not understand how Recreation.gov worked. We spent two nights in Marathon. The first night we enjoyed a Star Party and learned a lot about what was visible in the sky at the time of year. We drove to the park and drove all the scenic roads in the park before we went to the campground. We set up our tent and went out for a couple of hikes nearby. We watched the sundown paint the nearby cliffs in Mexico. Beautiful. From the camp host and some rangers we learned more about how to examine camp sites and read the list of features using Recreation.gov. We extended our trip several more nights. We did the majority of trails of the park. We enjoyed every trail we picked. We showered d at the store at the RGV. We soaked in the nearby hot springs. That made it easier to keep doing the longer hikes we chose. The birds at the RGV sang every morning and evening. The temperatures were hot and we carried plenty of water. We entered the RGV with 8 gallons. The water at the village was very good and faucets were placed at many locations around the camping area. Our last day the camp host left and the new one arrived. Most of the sites were blocked off because the increasing heat reduced the guests who choose to camp there. The new host said the heat was high but it was a feature to those who wanted to have more solitude. In the campground we saw lots of types of birds, a horse , a donkey, javelinas, and coyotes. None of them ever bothered anyone. We did see crows that would land on tables and look for food. We would have extended more but we had to get home. We enjoyed it very much!

Our site (26) had plenty of room with a large gravel pad and an easy little pull-in spot for our Xterra and a nice picnic table. It was secluded on 3 sides by thick lotebush and other vegetation and was near enough to the water and bathrooms that it was convenient. Also conveniently located near the nature tail.

That campground is too hot!! We were there the end of April and the temps hit 102 degrees. Hard to do anything but sweat. Nighttime was in 80s. Also there is NO cell service. You can get WiFi at the store. The people working there are wonderful. So friendly but the place is just too hot.

My initial concern was with the ability to get fuel, because I was driving my RV, but the Panther Creek gas station was open and had plenty fuel. The only place we couldn't go was the Chisos Mountain basin but we will definitely go back for that. Make sure to watch the movie at the Park headquarters, as its interesting to say the least. There was plenty of potable water available also if you need it, and the campsite has a dishwashing station by the bathrooms.

Loved this campground. Really nice, beautiful location. Campsite was great - had nice shade and was in a quiet spot.
@KenK05F43D3D6E · Camped on Apr 22, 2024 at Campsite #41
This is the nicest campground in the park, with the most shaded campsites. It was very clean with recycling available and helpful hosts.

Even though there were no hook ups, this campground is amazing. Wildlife was abundant and campground hosts attentive and friendly.

We love Big Bend and all it has to offer. The Rio Grande Village campground has everything we needed. We were tent camping. The bathroom facility was always clean, no trash in the campground, easy access to trash and recycle bins.

This was our third trip to Big Bend National Park. We chose to stay at the Rio Grande Campground to be close to the east side of the park. Facilities are very good. We had flush toilets and could walk or drive to camp store where there were paid showers. Our purpose was to ride the ferry to Boquillas Village. Had lunch it was a nice day. Previously we hiked the Santa Elena Canyon Trail. A very nice hike.

Our campsite was small and very tight. In general, the campground has too many sites for the size of the campground resulting in a feeling of being James in with little isolation from others

While visiting Big Bend, we camped in our Airstream at Rio Grand Village Campground in the dry camping area. Having previously stayed in the tight full hookup area for one night, the dry sites have large cottonwoods for shade have greater distance between neighbors. Although generators are allowed in some sites, we hardly heard any despite the heat. Javelinas roamed the campground in the evenings and coyotes and bobcats were spotted in the day use area. Big Bend is so expansive that we filled the gas tank when down to half of a tank in order to drive to all areas of the park. The Chisos Mountains area was beautiful amidst the desert and a welcome respite from the temps. The Parmesan Truffle Onion Rings at the lodge restaurant were outstanding!Definitely, Big Bend is a unique park experience!

Camp ground is well maintained. Only cold water in the bathrooms. There are showers up at the camp store ( $2/5 min)- they get decently hot, water pressure is decent but not great. Javelinas roam the grounds, we had them wander into our site like clockwork every evening. We stayed 4 nights- 2 of the nights it was very windy to the point that tents were blowing over. The sites around the perimeter seemed to have more wind protection but we were in essentially a big field and the wind was fierce.

We spent one night at the Rio Grande Village campground, the hosts were very helpful with information for exploring Big Bend National Park. We hike a couple trails in the area, one the natural trail had great views and took you to the Rio Grande River.
@DavidB5075483 · Camped on Apr 14, 2024 at Campsite #50
The hosts were excellent - helpful and friendly. Large sites - we were in a "no generator" zone. We have solar, and easily recharged over our time at our site. Remember - Rio Grande Village is much warmer than the rest of the park! (Ask the Rangers) Bathrooms clean.
@RobinB2917356 · Camped on Apr 13, 2024 at Campsite #53
The campsites are spacious and the bathhouse is clean (no showers though). We only stayed one night because it was really hot. The historic hot springs is a must see.

Your reservation system leaves some sites unused and unavailable for others to use.Also when a site opened up the day of our visit internet service was not robust enough there for us to reserve on line.I waited 40 minutes on hold waiting for someone to talk to in order to reserve an open site that night.
@DavidW7736336 · Camped on Apr 10, 2024 at Campsite #18
I'm in a generator allowed site, but it must be turned off in the hottest part of the day? (generator hours are 8-11am and 5-8pm.) The generator .keeps the A/C going that keeps the animals cool. Thus, I couldn't visit the park because we have cats and I had to be at the campsite to keep the cats cool. This is an inhumane practice! This also prevented me from seeing the park!
@DouglasP151659 · Camped on Apr 10, 2024 at Campsite #59
Highlights of our trip: 1) camping in Rio Grande village (nice spread out sites, lots of wildlife and nature walk gives fantastic views), 2) Santa Elena canyon!, 3) Hiking the "window" in Chios canyon and 4) relaxing in the cool(ish) water of the Rio Grande at the hot springs. This park is large - give yourself 3-4 days to see it. We visited in mid April. I would like to come back when the temps are below 80F

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
