Great river access. Was only 1/3 full on a Sunday before Independence Day. Most sites are FCFS. Clean pit toilets, clean campground. You can get 2 bars on AT&T if you wade into the middle of the river. Friendly hosts. Some road and train noise. Trains do not use their whistle nearby so it's barely noticeable at night. Some folks with generators but mostly off by 10pm. Weird donkey ghost across the highway that glowed in the moonlight and told me to visit Portugal even though I don't have a passport. Conveniently located garbage cans. Fresh water taps located throughout the campground.

The location was very beautiful just offset from the road and the outhouse was at a very convenient location. We enjoyed the privacy and simplicity of the site.

Beautiful old-growth campground. We stayed there on our way to eastern Oregon. The sites on the river are first come, first serve. B loop, where we stayed, can be reserved. Excellent separation between sites. The park was largely empty during the week in mid-September. Best to have a smaller camper, the roads are tight in places. We did not have much road noise but you'll definitely notice the train on the other side of the river at least twice during the night. Oakridge, about 7 miles away, is a small town with basic services. We enjoyed the trails in Greenwaters Park. The Buckhead Nature trail in Westfir was a bust. Not maintained and overgrown.

So close to the road, tons of yellow jackets. We left early.

This was one of the most beautiful campgrounds Ive ever stayed at. My site (70) was incredibly private.

It would be nice if we could reserve a spot by the river. This spot was too open and uneven.

We were especially grateful for the rebuilt amphitheater. This kind of upgrade is very important for our annual church campout.

One of our favorite places to go. Great escape not too far from home. Beautiful place, heavily wooded and very clean. Always enjoy our stay there.

This is a wonderful campground. The river was nearby and many people were enjoying getting in it. The vault toilet was clean and the water spigot was nearby. There was good spacing between sites providing privacy. People were quiet while I was there. My only complaint was the difficulty I had finding my site - #72. There were no signs directing me and I spent a lot of time winding through everyone trying to find my site. Finally, I asked some people and they were able to direct me.

Host was awful. They have super aggressive dogs, one that but my husband and several other campers that we saw. Then they put a snarky note in the camper basically telling everyone that if they get to close to the camper the dog will react and bite if threatened. After the dog bit my husband, she never even said sorry she shamed him for telling her to get a better hold on it and then she said something like, “well it didn’t hurt you “

Had a couple great nights at black canyon. Some sites are close to the highway (road noise) and some outhouses are no longer there, but overall quite nice and clean. Host was super-helpful.

Very easy to reserve on RECREATION.GOV mobile app,.we reserve during week days and the place is very nice and quiet(while the noise train is not passing near every couple hours anyway 😆) ,other than that it has clean water available, clean vault toilets,pet friendly, overall it's a good place, first time for us June 15th 2023,we definitely will come back again

The campsites numbered 40+ are some of the best. Lots of space between sites allows a secluded feel that is just perfect. Beautiful nature, well-managed facilities, and a friendly camp host. I will definitely be coming back next year!
@RogerC4303359 · Camped on Aug 6, 2022 at Campsite #73
Didn't know there would be a freight train barreling down the tracks on the other side of the river every so often throughout the night.
@KathrynN358869 · Camped on Jul 24, 2022 at Campsite #63
The site was cleaned and ready upon my arrival. The table could have used a wipe down in spots however. Trash cans are no longer provided by the facility so plan for that. The river access is wonderful. The hosts were friendly and helpful.

We always have a wonderful time at Black Canyon. We go every year to double site #40. Great site, lots of privacy, room to move around in. This campground always has the cleanest vault toilets. Hosts do a great job, all toilets had hand sanitizer and smelled CLEAN. Great campground for families, so many sites along the river. Great location for exploring the area. 10/10 recommend. Rangers are great too!

For 2 of us, this site was perfect. Riverside, clean, pretty spacious, table & fire pit included, half sun half shade. Downfall: near the main road (traffic noise) & train noise. If you are a light sleeper or looking for a quieter site, this probably will not be for you. *There are other sites away from traffic noise & train. Overall campground was great. Hosts were nice, place was clean, bathrooms were clean & did not stink, it was quiet (didn't experience drunkin parties), river was nice during hot weather (but current was still pretty strong). Fishing wasn't the best for us (no live bait, only flies & lures).

Site 003 was secluded from other sites. If we stay at the Area Black Canyon Campground in the future we will do our best to reserve a site closer to the river and away from the busy highway noise. I am frustrated with whoever is responsible for denying our request for a refund for the nights of July 11th 12th and 13th. We cancelled those nights with a customer service rep from Recreation.gov. We were informed we would receive a refund for the nights we canceled minus cancellation fees. We were asked by the recreation.gov customer service rep to notify the camp post that we would be leaving on the dates referred to above. He can’t host nor anyone in that campsite had access to cell service it was a dead space for all cell carriers. The morning of the 11th around 9 AM we visited the camp hosts campsite to inform them and verify that we would not be in the campsite for the next three days. For some reason we received an email two weeks after we left that the facility manager denied our request. I spent approximately one hour Speaking to two different customer service reps from Recreation.gov and they could not give me any contact information for the facility manager. In fact they had known number and the only number I could get was someone named Susan V. Bottom line the money wasn’t much it’s the principle of the thing that we did not stay the night so the 11th 12th and 13th. We canceled according to the policy but either the camp host whoever the facility manager is denied it and we don’t know why. Very frustrated with Recreation.gov that they can make reservations but they have no ability to handle any problems that may arise. If there’s anyway to make reservations in the future of that recreation.gov I’m going to try to do so.

Nice, convenient campground with beautiful trees and a nice river that is not good for swimming. There are regular trains passing nearby so there is a bit of extra noise to deal with. Camp hosts were exceptional and the bathrooms were very clean.

Site was clean and the host was very helpful and knowledgeable

The stream is a joy to sit by or to swim in, the bottom is round river rocks so a little slippy getting in. The host is a friendly guy, very helpful. Some sites here are fantastic and some are a little disappointing, it's a mixed bag. The FF sites along the river are best.
@PhilS237 · Camped on Sep 16, 2021 at Campsite #42
This is a nice campground. We chose a site that was closer to the river, but also closer to the highway. The setting was beautiful, but between the highway and the train tracks across the river, there was no illusion of wilderness. The water spigots were already winterized in mid-September and while this wasn't a problem for us, I wonder why they don't just wait to do it at the end of the month when the campground closes.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
