Amazing views. Pack all camping items. Hike up Old Trail to the cabin is about 1500 feet elevation in 1.8 miles. TOUGH but worth it. Pack light. Parked at the trailhead.

Awesome experience of for our families and friends. Cabin was perfect and just what we needed. Cannot wait until our next trip up!

The cabin was fantastic! In the winter, it is definitely worth bringing some wood of your own to supplement what you can collect up there — the fire is critical! The stove is small; smaller wood is better. Bunk rooms are so spacious!

Wonderful cabin with a fun and steep hike getting to the top. Cabin is spacious, with 4 separate sections each with a bunk bed, clear directions on how to use the wood stove and best practices on collecting only downed wood, etc. The view was pleasant, and as it is the summit and a popular spot, expect other hikers to hike up to the top (a chance to say hi!). There's lots of seating and places to place bags, and we didn't have too much trouble with rodents after rubbing and spraying our gear with mint.

Great cabin with spectacular views right outside the door. April 17, 2022 weather in the low 30's at night so a warm sleeping bag was a must as the stove does very little to warm the cabin, but that is part of the experience! With about 50 pounds on our backs the hike was about two hours going in and we were glad we brought micro spikes along for the top section of the ski trail which was snowy and icy. Firewood was easy enough to scavenge nearby. No water nearby so bring plenty. Hiked to South Doublehead and back to cabin on April 18 and it was good to have spikes for that as well. About 45 minutes from cabin to South Doublehead and the views there are even better than at North Doublehead.

Great hike up (steep!) and beautiful views. Definitely bring your own firewood.

Had a great time with snowshoe hikes, great views and weather. We stayed for 3 nights in February at negative Fahrenheit during night. A saw is essential to prepare firewood, of which there is plenty, a splitting axe is a plus. The stove is small and does a good job warming people sitting near it, but the hut gets warmer only by a few degrees (and never above freezing even during daytime). Fortunately this is mentioned in the description online, so we came prepared with appropriate gear and cold weather sleeping bags and sleeping pads (don’t forget a decent camp light). We also never got water to boil on the small stove, but hot enough for pasta. Adaption happens surprisingly quick, and we didn’t feel cold. There are few trails nearby, but hiking to South Doublehead (about 1.5h return) or bushwhacking down to the Saco river east branch is fun (3.5 h when returning in your tracks) and probably easier in snowshoes than in summer. I’m not sure if it was the cold or snow conditions (about 30-40 inches), but we didn’t see a single person. Some tools like a shovel for the stove, a broom and a big shovel are provided, and I had pretty decent cell phone connectivity.

Only downside is stove is too small to heat big cabin. Everything else is great! Amazing sunrise!

The old CCC ski trail is great fun with Telemark/downhill skis, cannot recommend trying it with XC skis but I can say I have seen it done! The tiny lil' woodstove doesn't draw well with the door open cause the fire box temperature goes down, once you get it lit close that door though and it works great - although it is only the size of a toaster oven so do not expect it to be "warm" inside the cabin: I would heartily recommend this trip to a friend who I knew was into winter camping, but not to people who wouldn't consider sleeping outside in the snow.

We had a very nice time. Make sure you have experience backpacking. Keep your pack as light as possible. We have two camping stoves and brought the wrong fuel for the tiny one we have so we had to rely on the wood stove and could not get water to boil. Other than our own mistake the cabin was relaxing and fun

I really enjoyed my time on the trail and the cabin the hike was more difficult then I expected, but not impossible if you pace yourself and plan ahead. I would suggest hiking the the ski trail up it and bringing water there's a few streams on the ski trail right before it gets steep if you have a filter. If your bringing gear up I would avoid the old trail and going down the new trail both are incredibly steep. If you want to go down the new trail be prepared it has lots lots of loose rocks at the top third of the trail. I fell about 4 times with trekking poles while going really slow. There were lots of bugs and little to no wildlife with the exception of some chipmunks on the road in and a mouse in the cabin (don't leave bags of food out). However, The best part of my stay was the views from the cabin. You get a wider panoramic view on south double head, but the sunset and sunrise views are the best from the cabin. The sunsets almost behind Mt Washington to the west of the cabin and the sunrises over Mountain pond in a clearing behind the cabin by the outhouse.

A wonderful, rustic 1930s log cabin with a great woodstove and a nearby outhouse. Bring a skillet to use with the stove and a hatchet to harvest the plentiful nearby down wood.

This was my second time staying overnight at Doublehead Cabin. After a nice trip last fall we decided to try staying here in the winter. I felt our group was prepared with plenty of firewood, warm cloths and appropriate winter sleeping bags. Despite feeding the woodstove continuously from 1:00pm until 7:00am water bottles were freezing solid inside the cabin. To be fair, it was probably one of the coldest nights of the year. Temps below zero and 40+ mile per hour wind all night. I would absolutely stay here again but not on such a cold night unless the woodstove or insulation of the cabin was upgraded. All in all, this is a magical place and a great setup for 4 guests. Don't forget to hike over to South Doublehead if you have time. The view from over there is amazing!

Visited at the end of the February. This time of of year you will need to be prepared for cold temperatures within the cabin despite the wood burning stove. Spectacular views and peacefully quiet.

The challenging climb is worth the views at the top. Our family had a wonderful time staying the night in the cabin.

Camping one night at the cabin located on North double head was totally worth the challenging but reasonable hike up the ski trail. Views are great. Eating breakfast the next day at the scenic view near the cabin was lovely. The next day, we (girlfriend and dog) hiked over to the South double head summit for an even better view. We took the new trail down from South double head which was quite challenging with a full pack...slightly dangerous due to the loose rock and slick tree roots. Have decent hiking boots for the new path. Pack light if possible especially if you plan to descend down the new path. Take all gear for the night in one trip so you don’t need to do the hike twice (oops).

Second stay here. The only negative is the wood stove doesn't really keep up with the cold winter conditions. It's enough to take the edge off but only raises the temperature 10 or so degrees above the outside temperature. I know it's a traditional cabin, but some insulation in the ceiling, improved caulking of drafts, and maybe double glazed windows at some point would really make a huge difference. It would also probably save a few trees from being scavenged from the area. Over all it was everything I expected.

Doublehead is always a great place to stay. We would love a bigger wood stove, but we get it!

Beautiful and cozy cabin. I've stayed there a few times. Can get very cold in the winter with a small stove and minimal insulation so make sure to stay warm. Have fun !!!

We thought we could make this hike a family trip. We prepared by hiking similar trails with the same ratings for two months before our visit. We never even made it to the cabin. I called the ranger station before we got there amd they did not tell us this was not a family type of hike. They were informed of what we were doing and did not give any further information as to how extreme the hike actually is. We ended up sleeping in the parking lot the first night because we couldn't get up the mountain. The next morning people were showing up and explaining that this was not that type of trip amd we had never been before. It should be labeled as an experience level trail and not moderate. Any of the moderate trails we had walked before were not to thia extreme of difficulty. If we had been better informed of the difficulty we would have been bettwr prepared and actually been able to get to the cabin. Also we rented it for three days. This is not a cabin you rent for more then an evening amd only travel with the bare minimum. I suggest that before you hike this trail you become more informed of what your facing.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
