Beautiful campground, lots of shade, small stream near our campsites. Overall we loved the campground and our experience there. We had sites #8 and #9, which are kind of tucked away together across a bridge. I took off a star for two reasons: 1. Site #9 had very small tent spaces! If that had been our only site, I would've been out of luck with my 8-man tent! Happily, site #8 had two or three large tent areas so it all worked out. 2. The bathroom had NO toilet paper our entire stay

Its absolutely beautiful. Great child friendly creek. Its tough to not have the potable water working. Also the hosts never replaced TP and it was out for a while so we had to bring our own in that all the guests used.

Balsam Campground was a beautiful getaway so close to home. The campground was clean and shaded, with gorgeous trees everywhere that kept it nice and cool. The sound of the river at night was an added bonus, creating a soothing atmosphere. We will definitely be coming back for sure.

Campsites are packed fairly tightly, so hopefully you get courteous neighbors. Also, the online map is *very* inaccurate. It seemed like 16 & 17 in particular were adjacent, so we reserved those two. They turned out to be about as far apart as possible within the campground.

Beautiful campground.

Our campground was across a small bridge but still within reasonable walking distance from our car. We had a decent sized site with 2 tent pads, table, and fire pit. The biggest downside was our campsite was right up next to the main road so we were kept awake by road noise until really late at night. It also rained in the afternoon and half of the campsite including the walking path had a sandy clay that turned into a really slippery mud that still wasnt dry the next morning.

The restroom could have been cleaned more frequently. But one thing that would be nice for you to disclose is that the campground is next to an active road. We had cars wizzing by late into the night and way early in the morning. Just alerting the campers to that would be nice. Also- the water was out in our campground.

Camp host was a witch. Also the campground was a mess. The grounds had cut branches everywhere. Look at the volleyball court. Its grown in and cant be used. There is a giant hole in the concrete, in front of the bathrooms that a couple people fell in and got hurt

This type of campground is just a little too primitive for me. No water in camp due to a busted cistern and we didn't have any advance notice. There's no firewood to buy, no showers, no bathrooms, only vault toilets. It was also 95 degrees during the day in July. It was kind of a miserable experience even though our family loves camping. The only redeeming things about this campground was that it was quiet and there was a pretty creek running through it. I don't have any big desire to go back.

We made reservations based off of a map on recreation.gov The map online was incorrect so we ended up reserving a spot we didn't even use because it was too far from our other spots. We also found ourselves next to a group site who's tent space felt encroaching, and noise was obnoxious. Had we known the map was wrong we would not have reserved these particular spots. The site was over filled with debri from tree limbs, and the bathrooms smelled so strong of ammonia you could hardly stand to walk in. Was told by the camp ranger that there would be no refunds, even though the online map was incorrect and we were not getting what we paid for. Extremely dissapointing. Will likely not return to this place.

We had a site that was right next to the creek. The campsite was clean. The campground wasnt very busy. We will definitely camp here again. There are pit toilets around the grounds. There are also water spigots around but not in every site. Be prepared to cut wood if you need some for the fire. There is lots of wood around but not in campfire size pieces. This campground is around 6,000 feet elevation so its a little cooler than the valley floor and theres lots of trees for shade.

Overall very nice campground. I stayed on site 15, and there was enough room for everybody, but we did have to hike in our stuff a little bit because sites 12-16 are farther from the parking lot. There is a bathroom that most sites all share, so going during a busy weekend wasn’t the best because there was always someone in there. There is a hike up by site 16 that was really fun to do and leads to a decent view. Overall, pretty good experience :)

First time camping at Balsam, great little spot. We chose it because the map showed it to be a bit secluded from other nearby sites. We were camping with a five-month old, so we were weary of her making any noise during the night. With Hobble Creek running right along the site, it provided enough babble to stifle any noises and provided some pleasant ambience. Site is about 20 yards from the neighboring sites, we couldn't ever hear the group next to us. Be prepared to move your gear between the parking spot and the campsite. Parking space is roughly 30 yards or so from the campsite across a small footbridge, so keep that in mind. Overall, great spot. Not busy at all during the weekday, one of the reasons we picked it. Would love to come back. The one downside is the group before us left a lot of trash and roasting sticks just laying around, we had to clean that up before setting up our mess space.

This campground has really gone downhill the last couple of years. Both this year and last year, the water wasn't drinkable and we had to send someone down the canyon to buy some. There was also a ton of debris and fallen trees that haven't been taken care of, which took up most of our campsite so that there was only one possible tent spot, right next to a very stinky bathroom. We were told by the camp host that we could move some of the debris ourselves to have more room for our campsite, or we could ask the people in the campsite next to us if they minded if we took some of their open space. Luckily our neighbors were charitable, otherwise we would have been squished in a very small space. It also seems like the fees have gone up and only one car is covered by the nightly fee, so for two nights and two cars it was $80, to not even have clean water or enough space for 6 people to camp. Where are my fees going if not to maintain the campsite?? Needless to say, after years of camping at Balsam, I likely will not be returning anytime soon.

We were very happy with our campsite. It was nice having the river right by us. There was enough room in our campsite for our tent and the campsites weren't too close to each other so we felt like we had our own space.

We have camped at Balsam twice this summer and had a great time both times! The campgrounds are clean, the bathrooms are impressively clean/not smelly, the neighbors were quiet. The camp host greeted us shortly after we arrived and warned us of rattlesnakes, since we had young kids and our puppy with us. The kids played all day in the creek and had a great time! We’ll be back next summer for sure.

The campground #7 was okay, #5 should even be a campsite or should be a discounted rate as it’s right on the road. I’ve been camping here for 4 years this is the first year the camp host drive around and patrolled the parking — we were camped in a spot that could fit a trailer but had a tent so we had three extra cars parked in our parking lane — not bothering anyone - it was friends who came up to say high and spent a few hours they were not staying overnight. She wanted $10 per car even though they were parked on our specific site and NO ONE was there!!! Thats ridiculous! We already paid over $200 to camp! We also had a 3 ft rattlesnake roll through camp Friday night. We told the camp host and she said “yeah we had a bigger one last night” she made no effort to alert the nearby campers who had young toddlers and dogs with them who were running around in the brush!!! So we went around and let people know ourselves so that no one would get hurt and we ushered the snake out off the way across the MTN side. I won’t be coming back here if the parking is going to be patrolled so crazily. Been camping there for 4 years and we have never had an issue — if it gets full people go down to the lower lot. We do fine patrolling ourselves and a few per car is nuts if they aren’t spending the night! Going elsewhere next year! (Mostly because of the rattlesnakes!!!)

I went to Balsam campground for one night for a Mother/Son campout (I'm the mom) with my two adult sons. It was excellent! The signs made it easy to find, our campsite had my name on the reservation, and the campsite was a beautiful spot - surrounded by trees and bushes. Our campsite was clean when I arrived. Shortly after I arrived, the camp host drove by to welcome me and make sure everything was okay, which she did several times during our overnight visit. The port-a-potty was clean and actually didn't smell too bad at all (as far as port-a-potties go). There was a grass area beside our site where we played corn hole and shook out our tents the next morning (it had rained a lot). CAMP SITE 5 is great! The grassy area beside us was a nice place to play. There is a water spigot close by, and the bathroom is right next to the site. It is secluded with trees (even from the top which helped when it rained). The area for tents isn't too big, so don't plan on bringing too many big tents, but it did fit our three small tents just fine. We found wood easily by walking not too far. The walk around the campground is nice. There are fun places to walk around with tree limbs to walk on and a river to see. The next morning we went on a short hike that we drove to, not too far, WADSWORTH TRAIL. It is an absolute beautiful hike, not steep at all - just a walk along a trail where you see beautiful small waterfalls, trees, little brooks, etc. At first, I thought Balsam was a little too far up the canyon to drive to, but it is definitely worth the drive. I came home and told my husband that our whole family should camp there sometime. It's a wonderful place to camp!

The campground is mostly used by day use people. There was no campground host nor drinkable water. The water coming out of the faucet was red and sand within it. Cows ran outside and within the campground.

NOT our vibe at all. The creek was sad. I nearly puked trying to use the bathroom. Camp host never even said hello.

Hidden Gem. Quieter than most campgrounds. Nice creek running all the way through it. Above average tree cover if you like shade. We visit every year; early season is great!

The campground host was very nice and extremely helpful in working out a glitch with a campsite reservation. We were able to work it out to everyone's satisfaction. Pit toilets were very clean.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
