Great cabin. Beautiful lake. Very peaceful. Last two miles of the trail are a bit rough. Wood stove is awesome, would recommend one with a window in the future. It would be great if the forest service put a canoe out here instead of a Jon boat. Cabin was cleaned and well maintained. Thanks!

First 1.5 of trail is great. They ate working on making it better but it is a process & greatly appreciated. Cabin was clean & well equipped with an ax & area for dry wood. They view in the morning were grand & we had a great stay.

The trail conditions were dangerous. There is no bridge across one of the rivers. The boards are broken along the trail. The trail needs updated markers as the snow was deep and at times unable to see where the next trail maker was without our trail map. Cabin was nice and heater worked well. Beautiful views.

The cabin is great. The winter traverse from John Muir is fun. The door needs some weather stripping because it's quite leaky. We had temperatures in the teens and single digits. It took 11 hours to thaw out and warm up the cabin.

Rough trail, amazing cabin, thanks USFS.

Everything we needed and expected was there, for a comfortable and cozy stay, though we were sad not to find a log book. Not a remarkable cabin site, among the many great ones in this area, but lovely nonetheless.

The trail is not marked. could not find the path through fresh snow.
no reflectors, or flags, as is done in other trails. only a single way-plaque.

trail drainage is poor, water runs along the trail, and not off of it.
ice is not visible under the snow...

Great, cozy cabin with convenient fishing and gorgeous views. Beware the muskeg holes near the cabin (there's one in the trail beside the lake) and across the lake in the meadows.
You may also want to bring an oar or kayak paddle if you intend to use the provided skiff; our last visit revealed only one present oar, which made paddling a he lake in a breeze exceptionally difficult-not impossible, but difficult.

My friends and I hiked to this cabin on the first weekend in April. We were post holing for the way out and did our best to clear some snow from the boardwalks to make our hike out (and future hikers) a little easier/safer. We almost missed the river crossing despite helpful sticks pointing in an arrow but made it to the cabin in one piece. Due to the post holes, our feet were wet but the propane heater was awesome and dried out socks and boots as we waited for the second half of our party to arrive. We were able to play card games and have dinner and breakfast cozy in the cabin. No issues with the stove, which we use a Dura-log in, or the propane heater. Would love to go back in the summer to use more of the lake!

Trail in on a warm day made it difficult to hike in the snow without falling often. The hike out was much better due to re-freeze of the snow pack. Trail at the beginning is great, but not well maintained after a little more than halfway.

Cabin was in nice order, and the propane heater worked just fine as well as the fire stove.

Unfortunately when we returned to the trailhead our car had been broken into and stolen. DO NOT leave valuables or keys in your car. There is no cell service and there are no security cameras in the parking area.

It has been very cold in Juneau, single digits.
The heater was working intermittently. We used the wood stove in tandem, and that got it pretty toasty.
If you camp at Peterson, make sure you plan for the worst.

Great spot, lovely lake, slow fishing.

The heater is finicky - we had to turn the thermostat and timer both all the way off and then back on again to get them to work. We left a note explaining that to others. Try that if it keeps going off and on and seems to be cold.

Cabin was clean and warm and there was firewood neatly stacked someone had left behind. Thank you Juneau, for taking good care of this lovely place!

Great cabin, so cozy! Horrible trail-so broken down wet & muddy!! Still enjoyed the wild adventure though!

Super clean, the trail was great. There was one bridge that was washed out and broke in half but we were able to get around it since water level was low. Heat worked great!

The trail was mostly snow covered, the lake mostly ice covered during our April stay. The cabin was clean, the stove / thermostat worked flawlessly which was perfect for warming up and drying out. We did not use the wood stove. It was a perfect little get-away!

Snow covered trail. Be sure to bring snowshoes. We had 6 inches of new snow in the morning. Super fun hike and beautiful location.

The first part of the trail is super even and mellow given some recent trail work (thanks FS!). The latter part is very rooty and could be quite muddy in warmer conditions. We rented it on Oct 25 2020 and it was one of the season's first snows! The lake mostly froze and the walk out was beautiful. This is a very nice cabin, nice dock with boat in good condition, outhouse is fine. We had a great time and wished we could stay longer.

The cabin was in good shape and clean, and the heat worked well! We enjoyed having a rowboat to use, and liked finding the historical records about the Peterson family.
We rowed across the lake and found a cabin and other remains of old mining claims.
We were disappointed to see that former users, in spite of clearly posted instructions, had left perishable food and unlabeled bottles of “mystery liquids” in the cupboards, along with many other items they carried in but chose not to carry out.
Peterson Lake is a beautiful spot and we enjoyed our stay. The trail in needs some work, and there were only a couple of small child’s life jackets available for boat users.

We appreciated the spare flotation devices in all sizes for using the row boat. Thanks!

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
