Alot of non horse people tent camping. I don't think they are paying, as no employee came around checking on things. Went to use the showers up at the atv camp. Was told they closed at 2 in a rude manner. Mosquitoes were really bad from all the standing water. I grew up in this area and it's sad to see it get neglected.

Mosquito's are horrible.

Not a good horse camp. Majority of the sites are filled up with campers with no horses. Sites 3, 7 & 8 have large sharp rocks in the pens. Occasionally a park person stops by just long enough to throw some TP into the restrooms. There is a constant roar of ATV's that you hear all the time from the campground. The mosquitos are very numerous, only using OFF on my mule kept the mosquitos away. I liked the riding but I won't be going back.

Lovely location & campground however occupants in 2 sites next to me had +/- 8 constantly barking dogs until owners went in late evenings. Are there no limits to # of dogs at sites? Owners were just as bad as dogs since they would yell at them everytime they barked. Ridiculous. I nicely asked them to control dogs right next to me in outside kennel but they did not seem it was a problem. The mosquitos were too much for the horse they attacked him thru insect repellent. Only a blanket protected him. Never had fellow equestrian campers so blalantly distrupt entire campground experience.

I knew I needed to plan on coping with mosquitoes. I brought bug spray, fly sheet, fly mask, and a camping vehicle with screens on the windows. This camp is near wetlands with mosquitoes. Is there a way to inform potential campers to be prepared for coping with mosquitoes?I'm looking forward to new metal corrals planned for installation over the winter. I observed several camp sites in this horse camp occupied by people without horses or any stock. It seems a better screening process needs to be implemented to make sure those reserving a site for horse camping has horses (or other equines). Possibly requiring a check box for size of the camper's horse trailer? And, or number of stock? Or, both?

It was a great place the only thing I had a complaint about is the camper before me just put their waste on that outside of the stall and didnt take it to the waste area

The first night i stayed in space 7. the next place space 8 had a large loud group of homeless camp set up barking pit bull dogs, yelling profanity. up all hours until 2:30am. lots of vehicle traffic. very disturbing. The second night i moved to space 5, but the homeless camp moved to space 7, next to me again. so we left earlier than planned and would have liked to have stayed our entire time. The Federal parks dept. crew where top notch. very kind and as helpful as they could be, their hands unfortunately were somewhat tied. The homeless is a Statewide issue so I don't know why I thought I could have escaped it during a family outing. I would Love to help out, in anyway and work for the Parks department if ever you are hiring?

The camp itself was nice. Though there was not a wheelbarrow available for manure. Definitely bring your own. The noise from the OHVs can be heard constantly all day and late into the night. There were a couple homeless taking up a few spaces (unauthorized and unpaid) as well as a few creepers emerging from the woods into one of our campsites. This is not a camp our group will return to.

The camp is easy to get to and located in a quiet area of the recreation are. Only wish was a trail map. We were told that you can ride all over, but you will have to figure out where you are going and how to get back(GPS?). We took the 3/4-1 mile well marked trail to the beach.

LOVE camping here, however, I do not recommend if you have long-haired dog. Tons of burrs in my Cocker Spaniels coat....he's going to be shaved on 8/30! But love the campsite and nice to be able to take the horses.

Always a pleasure to visit, ride, and camp at WIld Mare :)

There aren't many spaces there and two of them were blocked off, I don't know why. Also there were two other spaces occupied with people that had no horses. A number of the stalls were in terrible condition, they were worn down deeply and had it rained there would have been a terrible mess. The parking was unkept and dirty, there was garbage all around the outskirts of the space we had, this attracted racoons which upset our horses and one of them suffered a laceration as a result of one racoon. The days we were there we only saw the camp host once, then just to put paper in the latrine, he and she never bothered to speak to us. I have spent many hours maintaining trails and horse camps so I resent those that use the horse facilities when they have no right to. Wild Mare is mismanaged about as poorly as possible. Go somewhere else.

Camp host was very nice. I didn't love the idea that random campers could use the horse camp. Several people came in to stay that made us feel very uncomfortable. Overall a good experience, not great.

Beautiful fairly private. Corrals very muddy. Gravel for drainage would be great. Horse trail to beach DEEP sand strong possibility of tendon injury. 5 m round trip. Beautiful beach mostly empty in that section.

It’s a good place to have a quiet week away from the holiday madness. Weather is always mild in the early off season.
@RogerD1192777 · Camped on Nov 5, 2021 at Campsite #10
Quiet, aside from the usual natural sounds. Lots of privacy. Very close to trail, beach and OHV staging areas. Not terribly far drive from services in town. Most corrals are metal pipe and offer 4 stalls per camp spot. The ones with the old wood log corrals are neat to look at but latching the gate seems impractical if not impossible. Plentiful water spigots along circle drive. Vault toilets clean, sanitizer station outside of them. Spots are easy to back trailers into, even our 36ft in the rain and dark. More double wide spaces would be nice, considering all campers there during our stay had RVs. A long horse trailer with LQ or 4+ horses may have an issue with parking their towing vehicle out of the way if they don't choose a double wide spot. We will definitely return on a regular basis. Great price with Interagency Access Pass disability/veteran camp discount.

10 minutes agoNEW The campground was quiet BUT Need more strict rules on check in and out. Next camper after me came on HOURS early and trapped me in for a day, only to start a huge fight and spin it like I was in violation. I stayed in spot 12 at Wild Mare Horse Camp. The reservation lady, Hanna, took the side of the INVASIVE camper. I will never go back and will tell all my friends about the rude staff and crazy campers that invade personal space. I do not recommend this place as the bathrooms were always out of toilet paper and filthy, people came in during the night to do drugs scaring my child, and many people do not leash their dogs. Unfortunately they have a GOOD OL BOY mentality and don't actually care about the grounds.

The camp host from horsfall was awesome but Wild Mare Horse Camp NEEDS it's own permanent camp host.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
