We love this campground! Definitely better than what I saw from pictures and reviews. We stayed at site 2 and my brother and his fam stayed at site 1. Which worked well as they are both tucked back up the hill and have a clear path between the two. Nice distance from the creek. A little bit of a walk to the pit toilets but nothing too crazy. The walking path is right between site 3 and 4, when we were unloading we decided to come through site 1 (which was more walking) to not bother the other campers as much. Theres not bear box on site so you have to keep everything in your car and just transport it for meal times. Not too bad though. The main issue we had with site #2 that wasnt clear was how close our tent had to be from the fire pit. Ill admit, our tent is a little large since all six of sleep in there but with the fly there was only a few feet from the pit to our tent fly. Smoke definitely came into the tent. The kids loved the big rock and hiking up the hill to the larger rocks. This was our favorite camp site so far in our travels to Colorado. We will be back.

Dan the host does a great job.

It rained a ton so this hindered our experience a bit. Campsite 3 is very hilly and walk up from parking spot, be prepared to haul everything a good 50 feet. Only good for 1-2 person tents only, no flat ground. It does have great shade & access to hiking straight uphill, also more hidden from the road. Campground is beautiful, short walk to lake, decent bathroom.

Beautiful campsite near the stream. My husband enjoyed fly fishing and I enjoyed the gorgeous hike around the lake.

Dan is an amazing person and a fantastic host. May Queen campground is the best in Colorado.

beautiful campsite, a kind and helpful host , close to the water , made our experience a wonderful. The best thing was that there were no generators running, so the camp ground was beautifully quiet. I would definitely go there again and recommend it.

I loved that May Queen was so close to the lake for kayaking! I also like that some sites are first come, first served. I actually had already paid for site 4, but ended up paying for FF site 26 because I needed 4 nights and could only reserve for 2 online. The vault toilets were clean and well stocked with toilet paper. The campground was quiet at night and the camphost, Dan, was very nice an helpful. I was in Leadville for my daughter's 100 mile race and was so thrilled to know that the runners ran by my campsite TWICE! :-)

Beautiful lake and outstanding campsite with great lake access and mountain views. Restroom was clean, host was friendly and helpful, good supply of firewood for sale. Unfortunately drinking water was not available, but we knew that ahead of time from the website so we planned accordingly.

Camp host is already retired. You guys just do not know it. Saw him once during a four night stay. Ill informed and looked like he would rather be somewhere else. Campground still has no water - after 4 years, I think. Something about a busted pipe. One would thing that even the USFS could fix a broken pipe in four years.

Wonderful lake with stream flowing into the lake. The loop of campsites was not too big and we enjoyed the hiking and biking. There are first come first serve that were mostly empty during 4th of July weekend! About a third to half of the paid sites did not show as well which was nice but wish more people could enjoy the beautiful setting. Yes, we will be back.

Beautiful lake. We loved the trails along the shoreline. There's a nice waterfall less than a mile from the campground. Vault toilets were well-maintained and zero-odor. Our fellow campers were friendly and quiet. We all had a terrific time!

I have been camping here for several decades and it never fails to please. The campground host Don is very friendly and works hard to keep the campground clean, and the vault toilets smelling pretty. His effort is verymuch appreciated! My only complaint which no one can do anything about, is regarding the horrendous mosquito population which made sitting outside at dusk nigh impossible. I highly recommend a screened in tent so you and your family can enjoy being outside and not have to douse yourselves with DEET or get eaten alive!

Beautiful quiet campsite. Well-kept bathrooms and very happy to see the water level so high.

The May Queen campground is a lovely little gem of the Turquoise Lake area. While we were there, the lake was in the process of filling from the winter runoff. The lake is a haven for fishermen/women. The lake trout consist of rainbows and browns, and we've been fortunate to catch some hefty trout that have over-wintered in the lake. The May Queen campground has ~22 campsites and has dedicated sites for tent campers. For RV campers, only a few sites may accommodate a larger rig. The rest of the sites are perfect for smaller and medium-sized rigs. Make sure to bring water, as it has been many years since water has been available at this campground, and electricity has never been available. The vault toilets are always clean and well-maintained. The May Queen campground is for campers that appreciate the great outdoors. It's tranquil, and the camp hosts have been very amenable through the years. This campground is above 10,000 feet, and the nights can be cold. It seems that we will always get an afternoon thunderstorm. There are hiking trails to explore, as well as the town of Leadville. We make it a point to visit the May Queen at least once a year and have been coming to the May Queen for about 20 years.

We LOVE May Queen. It is peaceful, quiet and the lake and river are stunning.
@bobb2528793 · Camped on Aug 30, 2022 at Campsite #3
This site is good BUT it's really only for campers with small tents because there aren't any good spots for a large, family size tent unless you set it up in the grass between the parking lot and the actual camp site. If you do that you're close to the road but the area isn't super noisy if that's you're only option. Otherwise May Queen is a nice campground.
@AllisonS664652 · Camped on Aug 21, 2022 at Campsite #13
We came here with a Scout Troop from Wisconsin. We found the sites quiet, wooded, and plenty of room for 8 with hammocks and tents. The trails are great. Thank you!

The camping was OK. However, it rained the whole time I was there and the temerature dropped considerably. It was hard to find the campground, even though I had looked it up beforehand on a map. The 'MayQueen' sign for the turn to the campground was covered by tree branches that had grown in front of it. Luckily, there was a car driving by and the driver told me where to go. If I had gone much farther on the Turquise lake road, it would have gotten harder for me to navigate the rough conditions in my 2WD car towing a teardrop camper. I did manage to hike along the Turquise lake trail that starts at the end of the campground which was nice (inbetween the torrential rain storms). At nine thousand feet, its best to check the weather before camping here and hope for the best.

My only suggestion is that a sign be posted with the name of the campground at the cement bridge. I spend a long time trying to find the campground because I assumed if there was no signage it was the wrong way to go. It was very frustrating.

So we actually left early due to the rain. But overall it was a great experience. Wonderful site. The host was amazingly helpful. Wish we would have stayed the night. But the rain was a bit more than we expected.
@ElizabethM1936 · Camped on Jul 12, 2022 at Campsite #19
This small campground is ideal for getting away from all the hubbub of the larger campgrounds. Site 19 is well shaded. Turquoise Lake water is higher this year, and we enjoyed fishing there. Turquoise lake is gorgeous. Regarding the national forest maintenance- Please, please, please spend some money and provide water at the campgrounds. These are lovely campgrounds. The fee for a spot to camp with no water, electricity, or waste dump is honestly ridiculous.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
