American Forks is an older campground at the confluence of the American River and Bumping River. Our campsite was close to the river and had relatively good morning solar exposure. Most campsites were well spaced with adequate room between sites. The restrooms are all pit toilets as you would expect, were clean enough, and well supplied with TP.The biggest downside of this campground is the lack of fresh water. Water can be found at one or more of the campgrounds along the Bumping River. So all in all, this is a nice Forest Service campground on the banks of the American River with nice sites. Just remember to bring your water or be ready to pump it at a different campground and bring it back to American Forks.

Great location. The camp ground was generally clean, but the sites were not updated after the 4th of July weekend. Our reservation was not on the site post and the camp host had not visited for 2 days. Otherwise, a great and quiet stay. Only 2 groups both nights - Wednesday and Thursday. Many folks come to the park to use the riverside. Site 1 is very nice on the river. The other sites are all fairly private. Site 10 and 11 would be great if booked together. There is a lot of abandoned old camp sites nearby and an old ski lift from the 1920's up the hill if you can find the trail.

We had a wonderful time and the ranger that was there was very helpful in relocating our campsite nearer our friends as my husband just had back surgery and could not walk very far.

This is a somewhat primitive but nice campground with good access to two rivers and a very scenic area. It might not be ideal for larger vehicles. The bathrooms were modern and within easy walking distance. There did not appear to be a water supply. The best part about this campground was that it is not located so close to the main road that the noise was distracting. There was mostly the sound of rushing water from the rivers, it was very peaceful and relaxing. The people there at the time were well behaved and it was quiet at night. The potential problem is that there was no campground host present, and with a different group of people it could have gotten pretty loud and unruly.

Good spot, some of them next to water.

It was super nice and peaceful!! Really beautiful too! Gets cold at night though so take extra stuff so you sleep good through the night!

Site 02 was great. Nice big area. We fit our 11 person tent just fine and could have fit another smaller tent or two. Right next to the river and shaded the whole day. Very quiet campground only complaint would be this site is right across from the bathroom.

This campground, though next to the highway area, was very quiet...only the sound of the rivers surrounding it. I was in #07 which is a perfect spot! No campers on 3 sides and close to the restroom. The site was large and had a great firepit that blocked wind from 2 sides. Picnic table was gigantic. There were wildflowers still in bloom and incredibly huge skunk cabbage that was stunning. The only negative was the lack of leave no trace previous campers. Trees around the campsite had been hacked up, spikes for lanterns were in 2 different trees, and there were a few pieces of garbage (packaging) strewn nearby. All in all, I liked the solitude and beauty here.

Definitely not a site for anyone who is towing anything that is longer then 22-24 feet. The problem isn't with the sites, its more the general roadway. We were on site 5, which was supposedly for trailers 45' feet and below. We were well below that threshold. There are trees to the edge of the roadway that's about built for a golf cart, and where there isn't a tree, they have drove in 8 inch diameter pressurized wood poles that stick out out anywhere from 6 inches-18 inches tall, making it impossible to back up. We called a couple days prior to make sure our site was ok for our trailer and our rig and we were reassured, there was no way even an ice road trucker could have backed up anything. We were lucky we got out, had to make camp at another site that we were lucky to find in the middle of the night. The site is beautiful. Camper vans, trucks with campers, or a small truck with like a 20 foot trailer would be ok, anything beyond that is a no go.

Small campground close to 2 rivers. Not a high end campground with all facilities. Some road noise from highway. Sometime not real busy.

Clean camp sites, very quiet with little highway noice. The Forest Service needs to pay attention on restrooms. One of the pit toilets was locked and the other made me gag from the smell and flies.

I actually missed the turn off to this campground because it looked like a horse trail riding place. A little ways up the road I discovered Cedar Springs Campground and a prestine campsite right on the river. Cedar Springs is further from the highway with no horse activity (flies, dust) within it so I parked at the campsite and stayed there. It felt like paradise

What a great spot I got! Walking distance to the river also drove to bumping lake there I was so dissapointinted to see several trash dumpsters full with garbage all around. Looked like it had not picked up in awhile. But the campground was tidy and dumpster there was empty :)

Close to the road but river drowned out the traffic noise. Lovely place. This was one of our favorites on our 3 month trip. Only issue was even though info about campground said it could fit our 35ft. 5th wheel it was a hard fit. Luckily my husband is good at this and was able to squeeze us in but we almost could not get out because of the placement of these large wood posts around the driveways of the sites. If those weren't there it would of been much easier. Road in and out is very narrow. No one could of passed while we were driving in and out. It is close enough to Mt. Rainier to spend a day there and dinner down the road at Whistling Jack's was amazing.

Nice quiet campground, clean restroom (for a pit toilet), easy to get into my space. Close to the river, and an easy walk to the American Ridge trail.

It's a lovely campground, and we liked that the spaces aren't crowded together. We spent a lot of our time up the hill at the American Lodge, (reserved by friends for our large group,) but would definitely come back just to enjoy the sound of the river and the wind in the trees. We and two other couples camped at American Forks (we didn't want to try to take our trailers up to the lodge) and all agreed we'd come back.

Very clean and well maintained, plenty of spaces. I would like to see more guidelines or rules concerning use of generators and electronic entertainment i.e. restrictive hours etc.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
