Teal is a great place to go. We have been there many times. However, the general maintenance of the area has gone downhill. From the condition of the restrooms to general upkeep of the site. There is also a complete lack of oversight. This has been a trend over the last few years.

There are still few trees and little shade in this campsite after the terrible beetle kill some years back. Trees are growing back, though, and other campsites in this same campground have better shade trees. DO NOT rely on a GPS / online mapping to get here. Or pretty much anywhere around this area. We've found different GPS mapping apps trying to send us all sorts of crazy ways in this area, including down the barest of a 4WD track across gated private property. Follow the officially described directions and you'll get here fine. Don't take Buffalo Pass from Steamboat to get here unless you're really prepared for that 4WD road. Though the distance is substantially longer, it's a much quicker drive to take Rabbit Ears and follow the official directions. As with any Colorado mountain location near water, the mosquitoes can be bad at particular times of the year. Plan accordingly. Mobile phone service is generally quite poor, but sometimes you can find the right location to get a little bit through.

It was a beautiful place and fishing was good. Nice and large camp area.

I thought that other review with the mosquitos was exaggerating, because I came last year when the weather was super rainy. Boy was I WRONG. It is ABSOLUTELY stunning here, which is why I booked another group trip here... but when I got out of my car at about 6:30, THOUSANDS (no exaggeration) of mosquitos flooded my car. It stayed like that for another 2-3 hours when the mosquitos decided to sleep with the exception of a few who still wanted to eat. Luckily my friends were troopers so they stayed the whole weekend but I really was ready to pack up my stuff at 3pm the next day and not endure another "Dusk til Dawn" vampire situation. Just eat lots of garlic the week before coming, bring high DEET, and contraptions that kill mosquitos on demand, and it should be tolerable enough to deal while you enjoy the rest of the amazing scenery.

Pros: This is a beautiful campground with lovely sites in a gorgeous location. Pit toilets were clean. Cons: The site is quite remote and Google Maps had some difficulty with directions. We drove for several miles across private land and then through what I guess was Natl Forets land before we saw any signage to tell us we were in the right place. As we were leaving, GPS took us to a closed road (Rd 60) and we had to backtrack to go back out the way we came. The campground is not well-kept (grass high) and had an bandoned, haunted feel. The day-use area was blocked off and appeared unused for quite some time and the campground had only one other family there. We quickly learned a potential reason as dusk fell and the millions of aggressve mosquitoes descended upon us. We ended up moving our campervan away from the lake and then getting out of there as quickly as possible in the early morning light.

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
