This campground is infested with weeds and yellow jacket bees.
@michaelg734741 · Camped on Aug 25, 2024 at Campsite #30
The host was ok, courteous and prompt with firewood.The site seems like it's been left to seed. Many of the trees that made it the jewel of the North West are gone and it just seems much more sad and forgotten about. It needs attention.

Big spots, lots of room between spots and very close to the river. Vault toilets were clean and smelled as good as you could hope. The only negative was was the tall weeds everywhere, seems like they could be cut back.

We had an unfortunate skunk spray incident in the middle of the night but highly disappointed the ongoing issues with not having a camp host 24/7

Beautiful location! Well kept campground with easy access to the river.

For such a beautiful location it’s so sad that it is in such a state of disrepair from the logging that’s been done and the lack of basic, general maintenance. The site we booked couldn’t accommodate a tent. In fact, most sites we walked through seemed to have limited capability to pitch a tent. This used to be such a great spot. Just so sad.

Would highly recommend! I would stay in spot 27 next time, as 26 is fully in the sun all day!

Nothing like it used to be. Does not look good. Wouldn’t recommend

We booked a camp spot for 6 people, no camper - tent camping. When we arrived, the spot was so tiny there was no way we’d be able to fit our whole group. We ended up leaving and (thankfully) finding a spot to camp somewhere else even though it was 4th of July weekend although that forfeited the $100 we paid to reserve the spot. If some of the tall grass had been mowed down it would have been nice because there would have been more space and possibly even river access. The bathrooms were okay but I’m pretty sure the well water was just river water… I think this campground is better suited for campers & those who don’t mind being side-by-side with other campers.

If it wasn’t t for all the trees that are down it would have been absolutely perfect. Otherwise I loved my time there.

Big Hank used to be a very nice campground, but it is not being managed properly. Trees were taken down due to disease, but the contractor did a pathetic job of cleaning up. There is a large amount of material that needs to be hauled away, and there are still dead trees that need to be taken down and removed. The outhouses are very old. While clean, they need to be rebuilt. Some campsites are cordoned off and need to be fixed and restored to use. There are only three campgrounds in the area while there is substantial demand for nice campgrounds. Kit Price will not have much shade for many years and is really not a very nice place when it is hot. Devil's Elbow is in pretty good shape, but only has 19 sites. Big Hank, when fixed properly, would provide another 30+ sites. In my opinion, the Forest Service really needs to step up and take responsibility for fixing these problems.

Forest Service harvested all the trees and did not clean up. If you have gone to Big Hank prior to this year, it will not be the same the same dense beautiful cedar forest. Not much shade left. :(

The campsite is quite rough right now. There is no full time host, and I really think that has detracted from the cleanliness and overall camp experience. There are many burn piles and a lot of large piles of ash in most campsites. I grew up coming to this campground and this was the first year I was disappointed with the quality of the campground.
@GlenB8670992 · Camped on Jul 14, 2022 at Campsite #30
While I could see why the trees had to be removed, it has completely destroyed one of the best campgrounds. It does not help that the logger left such a massive mess. Not sure if we will be back..
@BarbB6268873 · Camped on Jul 13, 2022 at Campsite #13
I enjoyed the remote site and appreciate that fallen trees were left as they should be in a forest; but can the vegetation be trimmed next to the pad as it is at other sites? Perhaps it is the type of vegetation. The bathrooms near the entrance were in rough shape.

The tree removal that USFS did at Big Hank is appreciated. But, it will take a few years for nature to repair some of those areas. Other than that, perfect. Thanks for keeping the bathrooms stocked and clean. Really nice campsites.

Couldn’t believe the status of this campground. We have been camping at Big Hank for many years. This was our first trip back after the closure. We will not return. What you’ve done is devastating, Our campsite 14 was unsafe to walk, so uneven, holes in the ground, couldn’t even set chairs around the campfire ring. No more shade, all the trees are gone. The burn piles in the campsites are so ugly and unsafe. I’d like you to visit this campground, I’d love to read your review..I consider this a primitive campground now, no host, no wood, no cleaning outhouses. I’ve requested a refund. I also heard that you are going to do the same thing at Bumblebee…won’t be going there either..

We have camped at BH for 15 years. It has been closed for logging the past 2 years. It seems that there could have been a lot more done in that time to clean up the sites. MANY slash pile burn areas are just left exposed and stumps were burned which will be a mess for years. Very disappointed at how things were left. With all that time, I believe things could have been left in a much more orderly manner. We burned as much debris in our area as we could pick up in the 3 nights we were there. I'm sure in a couple years . . . . but . . .

Where did all the trees go??? Big Hank has always been one of our very most favorite places to camp. When we drove in and saw how many large trees were down and that all campsites were totally exposed we were in shock. And as we looked closer to each campsite including our own we found that the campsites themselves had been demolished. There was a small space around the campfire but other than that dirt was pushed everywhere and there were burned stumps and debris. It was very depressing and sad. Will not go back to Big Hank. A couple of years ago we noticed the same thing had been done at Kitt Price campground down the river. Why is this happening??

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
