This cabin was beautiful up in the hill in the woods. There are no views of the stars. We were able to catch some of the Northern Lights from the waters edge. There are no beaches on this lake or at the property. The bottom is mushy and mucky except a small path when entering the water. It is very woodsy with beautiful trails. The downfall, the road you HAVE to walk to the cabin is hilly and long. It is about a ten minute walk from where you can park for your stay. After carrying a cooler and all our gear for two adults for 4 nights, it took 3 trips up and down the hilly road. Pack light and pack a cart with big wheels. It is a ton of walking and carrying youll be to tired to do much after the haul. I will come back but with a big cart to make one trip on the trail.

Quiet, peaceful and relaxing, beautiful surrounding, nice lake to canoe on.Was surprised,virtually no flying insects. No cellphone service was a plus.Cross country ski trails were nice to hike on. Biking trail not far away. Also in-between to stores and ice cream

Cabin was Awesome. Didn't need snowshoes or skis on trail coming in. Having cut wood for fireplace was great! Cabin stayed warm and toasty. Will definitely be coming back.

We had an amazing time at Mckeever cabin and it exceeded our expectations! The woodstove kept us very warm during winter camping and the cross country ski trails were very well groomed.

The cabin is very dark inside, even on sunny days. Bring extra lights or bright lanterns. The mattresses are more like a box spring. Not very comfortable to sleep on, an additional pad would be helpful for a good nights sleep. On a good note, the mouse problem seems to be corrected, not a single sighting!!

The cabin itself was in good shape, and in a great location on the lake. Wood was well stocked. I do wish that you could use the access road to drive right up to the cabin (4wd could easily make it), but I suppose I understand their reasoning for it. Unfortunately, the cabin has a mice problem. My friend and I observed at least 5 mice within the wood bin, climbing on the counters, and inbetween the panneling and the roof. I understand this is kind of the risk you take with a rustic cabin, and I am not at all upset with the Forest Service. Nothing you can really do. Increase their funding! But it is unnerving when mice are crawling around your head on the window sills in the middle of the night. Hopefully this gets taken care of before it becomes an even bigger issue.

We've stayed twice at McKeever now and enjoyed the quiet and natural surroundings. The cabin is cozy and always clean and stocked with wood. We do recommend another sign at the summer parking area for those headed in during winter directing you toward the cabin since Google maps has it marked wrong. (go left through the gate!) Was a great location to enjoy skiing/snowshoeing, and we also got out to visit some waterfalls and the Eben ice caves.

idyllic rustic cabin set away from traffic and noise. Not having electricity is a small challenge but also a joy to have time to live the simple life. Too simple, however, is not having a chair with a back - only stools. How hard would it be to add a couple of folding chairs?

We had a great time! My only complaint would be signage. It was difficult to navigate from the parking lot to the cabin. Specifically, a "cabin this way" sign at the foreboding gate would have been immensely helpful and would have prevented us from having to back track in the dark. That being said I will plan on using it again.

McKeever cabin is a a great place to get away for a weekend or a few days and unplug. The location is great for skiing and snowshoeing. The cabin is cozy and there was a nice supply of firewood for the stove. We hope to return again.

If you are thinking about making a visit to this cabin do not delay! You will be so glad you did. The road leading in had monster size puddles that my small car could just barely handle, so depending on the weather I think having 4-wheel drive would be good. The short hike in from the parking lot means not overpacking since it's a 7-10 minute walk. No bad though, and so short enough to make a few trips if you want to bring in some creature comforts. The beds had padding on them, and so no need for sleeping pad. I would recommend a lantern to hang up over the table for the evening if you want to read or write. The lake is beautiful and pristine, and the trails surrounding the cabin looked wonderful. I didn't get to explore because the two days I was there, a rare early-October winter storm hit the Upper Peninsula meaning it rained and snowed the two days I was there. Still, I had such an incredible time just cozied up by the fire, listening to the rain, the crackle of the fire, the quiet... Very peaceful. A special place.

Excellent getaway! Fishing is spotty but there are huge muskies in the lake. Beautiful surroundings, great trails. The cabin is basic but very nice. The water pump needs replacing. Carrying drinking water in is much easier than using the pump.

It’s a mile into the forest to park. Unload at the gate, then go park in the designated are. Then it’s roughly 600 steps back to the cabin, up/down hills. Yes, I counted. Bring a wagon or sled to pack stuff in/out to make it easier, maybe a portable shower or something or the sort. There is a hand pump for water half way down the hill towards the lake. Bring your own bucket/container. Loved the time there. Will be staying longer next time, seeing we now know what to expect. The mattresses are similar to bunkbed bunkie mattresses, however, these are innerspring mattresses with no padding. Some of the springs have been sprung. We did flip over the mattresses, yet you’re better off bringing a sleeping bag, yoga/sleeping mat. Might want to bring some 409 cleaner to clean off the counter and metal area. A little dirt never heard anyone however I have no idea when that metal area was cleaned off. There is a table with two long benches, two sets of bunkbeds, the woodstove and small countertop. Outside is a nice deck, picnic table, grill and fire pit. The wood for these woodstove has already been split for you. However, the wood for the fire ring needs to be gathered from the surrounding area. There is an ax in the woodshed. The Park Rangers, in Munising, were very easy to talk to you and had good information. We bought a new notebook and started it. The others were full. It was nice reading what other people had done and experienced. I did read that someone had actually paddled in from the lake and brought stuff on their boat to the campground instead of having to pack it in. Nice thinking! If you are not used to complete silence at night, bring a battery powered fan. It is exactly that, dead quiet. It was great! We did enjoy the time there. You will definitely get your steps in. Sadly, no Sasquatch. 😭🥹

Secluded little cabin in the middle of the woods. Didn't see another person unless we ventured out of the area. Perfect quiet getaway.

The cabin was perfect and left in perfect condition by the previous renters… Hope we did the same! The reservation system and combination entry code word worked perfectly. The only suggestion is to make the directions from the parking area to the cabin a bit clearer for us first timers.

During the winter its about a mile long un groomed ski or snowshoe in and out. (If your not familiar with the area: Directions from the allocated parking lot are not clear, no map, just 2 small signs- one at the highway, one further in that point to "cabin") We had a enjoyable weekend there. Glad to have a place we could ski/stay with our dog. Of course we were there during the coldest weekend ever -18 to 10 degrees during our trip...it was a cold trip to the outhouse! Thankfully we stayed cozy inside with the woodstove (there was plenty of wood), enjoyed the wild birds, went on all 3 ski trails and skied out on McKeever Lake.

Most excellent place. Remember to have the passcode, toilet paper and a lighter! Water pump is iffy so be prepared to collect/filter/boil water.

We love the cabin so much. A great annual family trip. Other than a flush toilet, I cant think of anything I'd change haha. The peace, quiet, and nature are all so beautiful. We love this little gem! Cant wait to come back next year.

McKeever cabin was great. you can hear loons on the lake. the only negative was the bunks were Very hard to sleep on.maybe an air mattress on it would be more comfortable. the top bunk as you enter had a very bad smell .otherwise I would go again in a heartbeat.

This is a terrific place to stay. Very isolated. We never saw any other people near the cabin other than fishermen on McKeever Lake. The walk from the parking lot to the cabin is pretty brutal (at least if you're hauling all the gear for your family of four, as I was), but that's my only complaint. We hope to come back next year.

Very grateful to have this place. Only real complaint was that the bunk beds near the door smelled like cat pee. You can smell it sometime outside the front door too. Not sure if this is some kind of mouse repellant or if someone brought their cat. Or maybe it's something else, but it reminded me of how my grandma's place smelled when she had old cats that peed on the floors. There are mouse nests in the window frames, and we definitely saw one running around. But that seems like it comes with the territory. Otherwise we had a very nice time.

We had a great stay overall. The walk back was a little hillier than we expected and I was glad we brought our WheelEEZ beach cart to haul gear back and forth. We beat the bugs in early May and had wet weather most of the time but it was still beautiful and our last day was sunny. We enjoyed cooking on the wood-burning stove and enjoyed the ranger visit and helped stack firewood in the shed. The outhouse is well ventilated at the top and bottom. I would imagine when bugs are bad this would make using the toilet a challenge at times. One major issue is the water pump. When we arrived on Sunday evening and went to get water for the pups I pumped a long time before gritty water came out. We had brought a camping jug with 5 gallons of water from home so that sufficed. I counted the number of pumps it took to get water on May 5, 2021 and hit 200 full pumps without a drop of water coming out. This to me is a major issue when one expects a decent source of drinking water. I failed to pack my water filter and will not make this mistake again when cabin camping. The ranger stated the water was tested every month and the grit wasn't an issue during the firewood delivery. I called the office upon returning home to let them know I could not get water out of the pump. Pack food and cooking items in totes, I think we use a 17-gallon tote. They fit under the bed's well and keep the mice out of food, and fit the beach cart well. Bring TP and a way to filter water and you should be all set to enjoy this beautiful cabin. No Verizon, which basically went dead just south of M28. We had a Bivy satellite communicator in case of emergency or if any family needed to get in contact with us.

Our second trip to McKeever cabin. This time in the snow! Enjoyed snowshoeing to and around for the weekend. The wood burning stove kept the cabin very cozy and warm. Well was frozen so did have to filter water from nearby stream to supplement our supply. Well worth the drive from downstate.
