Trail to Lost Peak was great. Nice and quiet campsite. Clean bathrooms were a plus.

No cell or GPS service at all. Was there over 4th of July and not crowded. Many empty tent pads. Very quiet. Stop by Sitting Bull Falls on your way in or out. Well worth the 7 mile side trip. Fill your tank before heading to Dog Canyon, no gas for over 100 miles.

Wonderful remote campground with water and flush toilets. WiFi was available on the porch of the ranger station; there is no cell service out here. Had a skunk and a couple javelinas come visit our site.

The campground was beautiful and well-maintained. We appreciated having access to WiFi (available at the rangers station). The various trails offered scenic and easy to moderately strenuous hikes. This was our third camping trip to Dog Canyon, and we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay each time.

Dog Canyon is pretty remote for car camping in the lower 48 states. We saw mule deer as usual, but this time we also saw a herd of wild goats on our 13-mile loop hike, two wild pigs. Very windy the first two nights there, and then the 3rd night of our full week there, the wind settled down at about midnight. But know that it does get windy. There were only a handful of people until a larger group came from Texas Tech. With only 1 male and 1 female toilet and sink in the campground, and no showers, you have to sponge bathe if you want to be there for a week. Campers need to be aware that that should not be done just before it gets dark or first thing in the morning...just not fair to tie up the bathroom at high-traffic times of day. Do not expect to see a ranger during your stay, and there was no campground host either. Be self-sufficient in every way. But we love it here and will keep coming back year after year.

Nice secluded campsite - neighbors were friendly but quiet. Only downside is the lack of showers but the heated bathrooms were a plus!

Wonderful find for a hiking

Beautiful, quiet setting. Plenty of options for activities in the area (hiking, driving, birding, etc.) Small RV sites are nice as they keep out the overbearing domineering types. Bathrooms were always clean, wifi signal always available at the ranger station. I hope to return sometime.

It is on the list as one of my favorite parks. Spent 3 nights with my wife and we both loved it. Park was clean and well taken care of. Connectivity however was non existent but if youre looking to unplug then its the perfect spot.

Lovely remote spot! Bathrooms were tidy, camp areas well maintained with excellent views of the canyon.

Very remote. Beautiful views. The pad for the site is fairly small - 1 tent only. The wind would pick up in the mornings making it very difficult to cook. Great hiking!

I was really disappointed about my stay at Dog Canyon. Here are my reasons;The RV sites are basically a gravel parking lot with four very closely spaced sites. I do not have a large rig, we have a Northstar pop-up camper on the back of a Dodge truck and when I went to the back of my camper I felt like I was in my 'neighbor's' site. If you are a dog owner, (we had 1, one neighbor had 2 & another had 1) even having them on six foot leashes it was hard to give them any space. I have camped a lot of places, including overflows and have never camped in such a small, closely spaced site.The only bathroom, which was very nice, is down the road approx 200 yards in the tent loop. Quite a walk for the middle of the night if needed.As far as access to the campground, when it is stated that it is 2 hours from Guadalupe Mountains National Park entrance, it should be noted that that access is not through the National Park. We entered through a road on the outside of the Park (about 1-1/2 hours drive) and I was shocked that you could not access any other parts of the Park besides Dog Canyon Campground once you were there. I think this should be stated much more clearly. I have literally not seen another portion of the Park because of the amount of time it would have take to get to the entrance and therefore the rest of the Park.There was a 'Welcome to the Park' building, but it was never opened while we were there and according to campers we spoke to it had not been opened in the days prior to our arrival. There also appeared to be surrounding buildings for a Host or support staff, but we did not see a Ranger or any other support staff while we were there. This I found odd for a National Park.In conclusion, this is a remote campground with good tent camping. There are lots of hiking options from Dog Canyon Campground. This is not a campground for RVers (of any size) to experience Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

Great to camp out in the lovely valley, only problem is the campsites are really close together which is weird in such a big park. Other than that, the campsite is next to many hiking trails that get you up into the mountains with awesome views! Next time we plan on hiking in from the south side or a through hike from either side/.

Dog Canyon is a beautiful primitive campsite with 4 RV sites and several tent camping sites. There is no electricity or water at the individual RV sites but a bathroom and a potable water hydrant is nearby. There is a trail head that leads to 2 different trails at the camping site and a shorter trail is nearby the tent sites.

Small, remote campground (YAY!) with convenient services and parking. Most sites are very close to each other but the small campground is quiet so not really an issue. Availability of shade/not is well documented on the reservation site. The 3 local hikes are described on the board at the bathrooms. All hikes at https://www.nps.gov/gumo/planyourvisit/dogcyn_dayhikes.htm. Hikes are not described in the NPS brochure.

Beautiful site! We did a wonderful 8-mile (16m RT) backpack from Dog Canyon to McKittrick Ridge Camp.
@DanutaK168F0BE · Camped on Mar 23, 2024 at Campsite #A
Dog Canyon is a beautiful, very isolated campground on the North edge of the national park. There are only 4 RV sites, for rather small RVs, and about 10 very nice tent sites, for which you need to park the car on the neighboring parking lot. The surroundings of the campground are gorgeous! Keep in mind that hiking trails from the campground are rather long and steep up. There is a short nature trail mostly on flat terrain. The night sky is breathtaking!
@WendellSF255CB · Camped on Mar 22, 2024 at Campsite #9
We had a great time at Dog Canyon! Hiked the nature trail close to camp. Also, hiked up to lost peak as well as to the tejas trail/mckittrick trail junction. All tent sites were full except for one. Only complaint was that the tent sites were a little close to each other. Lets just say we made some new friends and it was a lot of fun! No cell service at all. Wifi was a short walk to the ranger station/office. Bathrooms were clean with flushable toilets.

Beautiful out of the way campground in this remote but worth the trip national park. Great hike to McKittrick Valley overlook.

Great, quiet spot close to McKittrick Canyon, Lost Mountain, Sitting Bull Falls

This campground was clean, secluded, and had nice facilities. My misunderstanding of the term "dry campground" had us bringing a lot of water along, but there were bathrooms and drinking water (no showers). Lovely host and a small ranger station staffed by a kind volunteer.

Dog Canyon is a great, quiet campground. I spent three days there. There are plenty of trails you can access from the site without driving. The volunteer park ranger was very helpful and great to talk to. I had plenty of room for my set up and parking was convenient. As always, a flush toilet/"real" bathroom was appreciated, as was the wifi available at the ranger station. I'd recommend the site and hope to return.

Loved the isolation, hiked way up and felt the power of the breeze naturally!

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
