My first kayak camping adventure spoiled me. A more beautiful, remote paddle in the wilderness (in relative safety) is hard to imagine. The six-hour drive was well worth it, and I plan another trip in the Fall, four or more nights rather than two. I'll camp along the Oconee and Chattooga rivers and nearby lakes in the meantime, but what could compare to the Okefenokee Swamp?I anticipated this trip for months, and the experience was everything I imagined and more. I worried a bit about getting lost before the trip, but the trails are well marked, and departing from them is usually impractical even if you wanted to do it. Gaia GPS on my phone was nice to have, more on Floyd's Island than on the water, but the map on the Wilderness Canoe Guide is sufficient. Signs at the intersection of trails can be confusing without the map.In late April, 2024, a recently fallen tree across the trail from Stephen C. Foster State Park to Canal Run required dragging my kayak out of the water and around what's left of the tree trunk. Someone cleared a path around the trunk; otherwise, the obstacle might have been impassable. Portage around it without getting my feet wet was a challenge, but I managed. I never needed to take my boat out of the water otherwise, except for the portage across Floyd's Island.A ten-mile paddle is a workout but not too much for a 62-year-old man, and I felt much younger at the end of the trip than at the beginning.

April 18th 20th, 2024.As a frequent visitor to the Okefenokee for over 20 years I am disappointed by the condition of the Bluff Lake Shelter the toilet lid was not secure, and the steps on the platform are spongy. I do not know if this is due to a lack of funding for staff and materials or a logistical problem. We were a group of seven with an age range of 26 to 70. Our trip started at SCRA with the first night at Floyds Island, about 13 miles. We took rest stops at Coffee Bay and Canal Run. The channel leading to Floyds had a lot of downed branches that we had to slide over or go around. If the water levels were low this might have been impassible. Day 2 Floyds Island to Bluff Lake Once we cleared the channel from Floyds Island it was a nice paddle for 6 miles. At that point, the trail narrowed and had a lot of twists and turns. I had to split my kayak paddle and use it as an oar because it was so tight. Several dams of muck had accumulated that we had to bushwack through. We finally popped out into a wider channel and made our way to the Bluff Lake Shelter. We had a celebratory beverage to mark the occasion We made it through the most challenging trial of the Okefenokee! Bluff Lake to King Fisher Landing was a breeze. A wide channel but no tree cover to provide shade. Our shuttle arrived early and we packed us up for the ride back to SCRA. A couple of people on the trip said this was the hardest thing they have ever done and are looking forward to the next trip.

Camping on Cedar Hammock platform was enchanting.I would recommend excellent mosquito protection for after sunset hours.

We had a wonderful time at Cedar Hammock camping platform. Even though it is only 3 miles from the boat ramp we were able to explore 8-10 miles of the swamp each day. Great platform for those new to canoe camping or with less experience. Would highly recommend this camping experience and already planning our next adventure!

great time. saw deer, lots of gators, couple snakes. weather great. signage on orange train from billys to canal run needs attention(most were missing).two trees down across canal just west of canal run shelter had to be bushwhacked around. all in all a great time was had by all.

You are on your own out in the swamp, that's part of the beauty of it. Be prepared for bad weather, and have a plan for emergencies. Difficult to tie tents down on platforms, winds can be a problem for tents starting around 15 mph.

The process for obtaining a permit was actually very easy. All the staff were so helpful and Joy is definitely the all-knowing one! We had a great time and will be planning future paddling trips!

This place is wild. Expect to see pterodactyls flying overhead at any time. It is silent and full of noise at the same time. I came away with my senses sharpened for all the wonder.

Been on many trips in the swamp now and love the peacefulness of the Okefenokee. We always have a large group wanting to go and wish the islands would allow more than 20. Its good to bring some activities with you to the islands to make the trip more enjoyable. Mixons Hammock port a potty was in rough shape when we arrived this year and needed some attention before a group our size arrived but other than that trip was great.

Mixon's Hammock was the last camping site in the Okefenokee Swamp that two of my friends had not yet camped in the 15+ years of camping in the Okefenokee. We were able to check that site off of their list and we all agreed that it might be our favorite sites out of all that we have visited. Unfortunately, due to health and weather concerns, we opted out of our planned second night at Floyd's Island...our second favorite site.

Sunrises, sunsets, bright moon, stars, wild life all over, peace and tranquillity. All the reasons to do any platform in the swamp. Monkey lake, definitely check out buzzards roost lake. Epic views and the peace is unmatched. Cedar hammock, be prepared for epic sunsets and sunrises and have your cameras ready. The swamp is a place for those seeking some soul enrichment. My 11th year in a row doing this trip. I hope to do it for 11 more

The shelter at bluff lake in okeefenokee was in pretty good shape other than a couple of landing boards need replaced.it was a great experience to sleep in the middle of the swamp!

Best back country canoe trip. Ecosystems include rivers, islands, prairies, lakes, and hammocks. Wildlife includes fish, birds, alligators, turtles, and snakes. Evan saw a bear and key deer once. Watch out for snakes. Camping is mostly on platforms with 1/2 roof. Very nice if it's raining. Best part is once you make a reservation your party is the only one on the trail you have reserved. Tip: Pack carefully as you will be on your own and cell reception can be spotty.Shout out to ladies who make the reservations. They are really nice and how they keep track of everything is beyond me.

A very special delicate piece of wilderness which requires a tone of respect. Proper preparation is key. To camp in the remote sites requires total self sufficiency , stamina to get you there and back in whatever conditions, weather or otherwise. The wow factor is subtle, gators, birds, trees, etc. Silence, stillness can be a deafening beauty.

It was an amazing trip! One of the most unique landscapes Ive ever seen and we were able to hear the alligator mating call in the morning of our trip, and that was so cool!

Camping and paddling in the Great Okefenokee Swamp are outstanding experiences. On this most recent trip, the leaves and needles were just beginning to emerge and the red maples were already blooming. It was the very early stages of spring. Even songbirds were beginning to show up. The hawks and owls were calling and the overall experience was just grand! The trails were in good shape and the campground in Mixon's Hammock was roomy and inviting. When it's chilly having a nice warm fire to cozy up to before retiring is essential to a good night's sleep.

We visited Floyds Cabin and Roundtop on this trip. This was the first time for my two friends with me, but my 3 time visiting the swamp. The paddle was amazing, something new to see around every bend. So many wonderful moment's hard to say which one was the best. All the wildlife, all the flowers, the night sky, a paddle at dusk to view the sunset. Well worth the effort to get out into the wilderness.

Wonderful trip. Spent 5 days and 4 nights solo paddling the red/green loop out of Kingfisher Landing and didn't see another soul until about a half mile from take out on the last day. There was a good variety of habitats/scenery along the trails along the way, including shrub-scrub, open and water-lilied lakes, open prairies, and cypress strands. Shelters and the cabin on Floyd's Island were in excellent shape. There is a cart on Floyd's Island to help with shuttling gear for the portage. Mosquitoes were an issue at sunrise and sunset, but not bad overnight. The trails were obvious and well-marked where there may have been a question. Mile markers were helpful although a few were missing. Reservations can be a challenge to get with the limited windows to call and limited overnight stops, but the staff is very friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back.

Had a great 5 day/4 night canoe trip through the Okefenokee Swamp. The SCRA has great facilities, plenty of safe parking, friendly staff and a great cheeseburger with onion rings to enjoy after your trip. Highly recommend this trip and by having different chickees reserved each night ensures privacy, no unexpected surprises and solitude.

Always an amazing experience. Loved seeing and hearing all of the wildlife, especially birds and gators. First time seeing owls during the day. They were actively tracking us, just as curious about us as we were about them.

I had wonderful weather and enjoyed the beauty of the swamp for two days. It was tranquil and very quiet except for the occasional cries of sandhill cranes. The night on the camping platform was a unique experience, much quieter than I expected, probably due to the cool weather and early season.

Great Experience. FEB 5-8 Stephen C Foster to Big Water, to Floyds Island, to Canal Run. Orange Tail out of Canal Run to Stephen C Foster is VERY difficult. 6 miles of narrow switchback turns. Go slow be patient, plan to stop for lunch in your canoe. I thought $15 a night per person was expensive, but after this trip, I think that is very cheap for all the maintenance that needs to be done. Thanks to the wonderful staff that makes this experience possible. Hope to do it again in a couple years.

Any visit to the Okefenokee Swamp is a rich and magical experience. We have paddled and camped in the swamp several times over the years, and are always amazed at its beauty. We prefer winter visits to see more migratory birds and less mosquitoes. The canoe trail camps/platforms provide for an unparalleled wilderness experience; they even have pit toilets at every one of them for your biological needs. No canoe or kayak? No problem: they can be rented at a couple of locations at the swamp. And have your camera ever-ready to capture shots of sun-basking gators as you paddle! Finally, make your plans early, as the canoe trail camps are popular.

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
