We stayed for one night the day after a 13 accumulation of snow in Big Sky. We werent sure how the road would be, but decided to give it a try. FS Road 980 is very popular road and we were able to follow previous tracks all the way until the first gate. After that, we broke trail for about a quarter mile. The code to the cabin is the same as the code to the two gates you need to open to get to the cabin. The cabin was spectacular. The beds were surprisingly comfortable. The cabin had plenty of wood to keep the wood stove burning and the inside warm, though it takes a few hours to get the temperature up. The views of Bozeman and Belgrade at night are incredible. This cabin is so well loved and cared for, we felt so lucky to get to enjoy it for a night.

Came up for the night on 8/13 and 8/20. So much fun! We love this cabin in the winter with the snowmobiles and never had a chance in the summer. Equally awesome!

Little Bear Cabin was the perfect getaway for our family of four that wasn't far away - we live just down the road in Gallatin Gateway. The stars aligned when we had a couple of nights off, the cabin was open, and the smoke from regional wildfires cleared.We arrived on a Tuesday evening in a light rain, which quickly lifted. When the skies are clear, the view is amazing! Weather was beautiful; cabin was outfitted as expected - with a few extras like pots/pans, utensils, etc.Our girls loved reading outside, sitting by the campfire, and exploring. We hiked/bushwacked into Little Bear Lake, and walked to the rocky point to the west, which also had incredible views.Wild flowers were in bloom, which was *divine*We are so thankful for Forest Service cabins & access to Public Lands ~ we can't wait to get back to Little Bear!

While the cabin is difficult to get to, it certainly has charm and isolation. Be prepared to unlock two gates. The view is amazing and the cabin is warm and cozy. I could not find an axe to chop wood, but had warm September nights at the cabin and really did not need a fire. Make sure to bring everything you need. There really isn't much more the a few forks, spoons and coffee mugs at the cabin.

We loved our stay at Little Bear Cabin. The cabin was warm and cozy despite the wind that raged outside. The view of Bozeman is magical and the peaceful remote setting restorative.

The cabin is amazing. The view is great and wood stove is awesome with plenty of wood ready. I recommend arriving with a means of cleaning up in case others have left the cabin messy. We needed to clean a bit when we arrived and had a great time after cleaning. There were also some supplies in the cabinets inside the cabin if needed.

At least one group of people daily try to come down the road so it’s not entirely private. Next time I’ll bring a rope and sign… Beautiful views abound and fun woods to explore. Note that the lake is a steep plunge down the mountain and back. It is totally hikable but definitely not a short stroll. Would book again.

Well Im dumb and didn’t read the road is closed from Dec to June. Thought we could 4 wheel up it. Gate is closed about 10 miles out. So… no go.

The place was a mess when we arrived. The last occupants left food downstairs and in the loft area. Dirt and ash littered the floor and there were the remains of exploded fireworks outside along with other trash. I am not a clean freak at all, but it looks like the place is being abused by irresponsible people. I expect the cabin to be dirty and rustic, but leaving food and shooting off fireworks are universally not something that should be done.

If you're looking for privacy and quiet, don't spend your money here. Many groups travel to the cabin's location to check it out, including looking in the windows and trying to go inside. There was a lot of trash left behind inside and outside of the cabin.

Cabin is in rough shape and needs some fix up soon. Carpenter ants, holes to outside in chinking, ripped screens. Come on Forest Service get on it.

We stayed here the last weekend in April 2021. Hike in was 6.9 miles, 1400 feet in elevation according to all trails. Snow shoes might have been helpful as there was still plenty of (very soft) snow on the road and we post holed a bit towards the end. Cabin had a wood stove, two beds on ground floor and a loft accessed by storable ladder to get to two more beds. Had a picnic table and fire ring with grate outside. Beautiful porch to enjoy the views of the Valley during the snow / rain that came in. We filtered water from a creek (I think Wilson) that flowed about a 25 minute hike away. Would have been much shorter without snow since the road to the creek didn’t enjoy the benefit of sleds packing down snow that we could follow. There was no cooking stove, but cabin had pots / pans, grate for fire, and a roasting stick thing for sausages over the fire. Stove kept the cabin pretty warm, but temps didn’t drop significantly below freezing.

Great cabin! Sweet views, ski hill in the back yard, great spot to snowmobile, ski or fat bike to in the winter!

Cabin was awesome, views are breathe taking. Great cabin. Rules say no gun fire within 300 yards of the cabin. One firewood stump I found next to the road in about 25 yards from the cabin I started splitting and I found several bullet leads withing the stump, from .22 rounds, to .45 black powder balls, and several 12 gauge slug rounds. People are disregarding the rules of firearms and the Forest Service needs to crack down on it.

Great getaway spot close to town. Has comfy beds, and the best outdoor dining view in the county. Trails and forest service road are close for lots of hiking and mountain biking. Enjoy the stars at night!

Great location and beautiful views. Only issue I had was regarding the directions on the website. Heading south out of Belgrade, the turn east was well before the noted mileage. Look for the street sign as opposed to the odometer on your car.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
