Gorgeous location. Cabin exactly as described. We didn't realize other people could camp very near cabin, so we did have an RV neighbor near us but no issues, just not as remote as we were thinking it would be. Also some trails cut through the cabin property grounds, though we only saw a couple of people on horseback once so not tons of traffic. Excellent place for a base camp, beautiful trails very close by.

Quiet and peaceful. No cell reception which is great. The road back into the cabin is pretty rough. A truck is recommended. I would love to see a few more cabin put up in the Bighorns. Maybe a some in the northern half as well as a few more on the southern end. I'm certain they would be booked just like Pole Creek and Muddy Guard are.

So peaceful and secluded-we loved it! A little hard to find even with multiple direction preparations, but we made it. I would suggest setting a trip odometer from leaving Buffalo (or any other landmark) to make it easier not to miss the service road turn. Cabin was clean, plenty of firewood, and lots to see around the site. We plan to go back one day!

We couldnt access the cabin. The road had just been paved/construction that day when we arrived and we couldnt drive across it to get to the necessary road. A shame.

We had a great time at Pole Creek Cabin! Weather was great and all the snow had melted by the time we got there. We enjoyed playing games outside in the sun and setting up the hammock, lots of great trees for that. Wish I would have brought my slack line. I would NOT recommend trying to find the cabin in the dark if it’s your first time. Apple/Google maps took us down the wrong road and we ended up at a different group of cabins - if this happens to you, head back to the highway turn left and then turn right at the next dirt road opening. We had to sleep in our truck because we knew we wouldn’t find it. The 200 yard walk wasn’t too bad but we definitely brought too much, I’d recommend bringing a wagon to haul your stuff up. There is not a whole lot of items in the cabin for use. There are no cups, which is fine, paper plates and plastic silverware can be found. There is a stove but no propane for use. Some pots and pans. Lots of shade to keep you cool during the day. Great star gazing place. We hiked up behind the cabin and found some good rocks to boulder in and sit and listen to the birds. Overall we had a great stay! Would go back again

Our winter trip was the perfect getaway! There is a new stove that doesn't make the cabin nice and warm without overheating you. We hav enjoyed every trip to Pole Creek and will be back again next winter!

Absolutely wonderful. The little fireplace kept us roasting all night long no problem.

Gorgeous backwoods site. Cabin has mattresses and an indoor wood stove. Firewood is provided. Excellent experience. Thank you rangers!

Beautiful location, peaceful, trail to explore, great outdoor gathering area with firepit, picnic table, grill, etc. Be sure to bring an extra roll of TP for the outhouse -- it was about out.

This cabin is great. It's a nice size for a small group, and the surrounding area is beautiful. There were dispersed campers very close by, which meant noise (generator) and little feeling of solitude. But the meadow out front is amazing, as are the hills behind.

Great scenery and location. Cabin was cozy and things were picked up for us. The road in was rough and would not recommend without 4 wheel drive. Lots of wildlife right outside our door and great to have the solitude away from others.

The cabin is around 22 miles out of Buffalo. It is maybe half a mile from the main highway but still feels isolated. The cabin itself is very nice. No electric but didn’t matter to us. It was a cold raining day that we stayed there and fired up the wood stove and it was almost too hot in there by evening. Make sure you bring some led lanterns with you if you plan on doing anything after dark. It has a table and some chairs inside so that was nice. There were some supplies left over from previous renters but I would not count on anything extra being there. They give you cleaning supplies and brooms to clean it when done. Outside there was a fire ring, picnic table and then another park type charcoal grill if you wanted to use it also. There is plenty of deadfall around to go gather for firewood. There was some firewood for the inside of the cabin in a storage shed but not much. Agai. Don’t count on there being enough. The cabin is in the trees but by a meadow. We saw one deer but since the weather was not good didn’t expect much. Nice cabin to stay at. Not that far from civilization but a good get away.

The cabin is well appointed and spacious. The gathering stew with grill, picnic table, and fire pit is a great addition as well. The bathroom was in pretty rough shape. It likely is used by hikers and others in the are. Nice that there are only a couple of campsites near by and miles and miles of xc ski / hiking trails just right out the front door. The only major drawback is that the road noise from the highway is very audible and fairly constant. Otherwise, it’s peaceful and nice!

Cute little cabin in the woods. It was a little bit hard to find in the dark. We had it on GPS or we never would have found it. In the daylight we would had been fine. A fire in the wood stove took the chill off. We enjoyed a little walk about in the morning before taking off.

Got stuck in snow .4 miles away from cabin with AWD high clearance vehicle. Was able to back up pretty quickly & hike the rest of the way. But I am not leaving a 1 star review like so many others as I called ahead to learn of current road conditions before traveling. Please note that you will not be given the code to the lock if you call more than 72 hours before your arrival. Nice cabin and wood heater works GREAT! Do not overload as the walls inside are exterior siding and with modern vinyl double pane windows so it is insulated good. Enjoyed the wood fort to the sw of the cabin people have built. Nice setting in the woods but outside you still hear all the traffic noise from Hwy 16. There are 2 bunk beds but if 3 or more have physical issues you may not be able to get to the top bunks since there is not a typical ladder. You could use the benches at the end to climb up. The mattresses are pretty thin but work OK. Make sure to bring lights or D batteries for the existing lanterns as it is kind of dark inside and also has the typical sooty smell of a cabin. If you are a paranoid person this may not be the place for you. None of the windows have coverings and there is not an additional inside door lock. You may want to put the bench under the door handle. The cabin needs some window cleaner if the Forest Service or a future guest can bring. It would have been an even better stay if the windows were clean. Super good idea to have the towel rack with clothes pins by the wood heater to dry items. Wish others had that. Since I got stuck in the snow my shoes, socks and pants were soaked. Came in handy! OK place and the woodsy setting was fine but I would not stay again. 5 miles away is the Muddy Guard cabin with electric heat, lights, microwave, fridge and a sink all for just $5 more. It does get more traffic driving by there but you also get nice views and there is a creek. Way more birds too. Thanks Powder River Ranger District.

Did not know that in the winter with snow you are expected to cross country ski to the cabin approx 1mi. Online it only says you must walk 200m from the road.

Cabin location and setting was absolutely stunning! Firewood was well stocked, but stove was tricky to keep the cabin warm through the night. Plan for chilly mornings when you wake up in wintertime. Be sure to check out the clearing opposite the cabin area in the early morning for moose. The road to the cabin was fine traveling in a sedan because there was little snow, but check snow cover reports in the winter if you’re unsure and if your not using a 4x4 high clearance vehicle.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
