Cabin and location were nice. Booking info said firewood was provided starting Oct 1, there was none. Someone who previously stayed didnt clean up after their dog.

Great cabin in a beautiful location and well stocked. There is electricity in the cabin including 2 cabin lights and a USB charge port on the battery box between the bunk beds so you can charge your devices. The light bulb over the stove is missing its pull cord switch so it is lightly unscrewed to keep it off. All you need to do is tighten the bulb and it will come on, we didn't realize this until day two of the trip (we thought it was just burnt out). The lights were a huge plus but keep in mind they do run off solar, we were some what sparing with there use so future winter guests can have power. The wood shed is well stocked but you can tell people have grabbed all the smaller rounds of wood leaving only giant rounds or rounds that are a little too long for the woodstove. You can make the longer rounds of wood work if you split it small enough though. Also, there is a splitting maul but the axe is broken, so you may want to bring an ax to cut kindling. There were a few mice in the cabin and they seemed to be coming out of a hole that's at bed level of the lower bunk on the far wall of the cabin. There aren't any mouse traps in the cabin so a future guest might want to bring a few and probably not sleep in that bed.The skiing into the cabin was good with the main Gibbons Pass road being groomed but none of the other multi-use trails were groomed. There were a lot of snowmobilers and I would recommend keeping the outer gate to the cabin locked if you don't want snowmobilers coming right up to the cabin while you're there to check it out. If there is a full moon id highly recommend night skiing out in the meadow, the moon reflecting off the snow makes it very bright so no headlamps are needed. Hope this review helps any future cabin goers! This is a wonderful wintertime cabin to ski into, with decent snow even during a dismal winter.

I know its rustic. But was kinda disappointed. My first swing of the ax and it was the broke/the head fell off. People had been using the ax head and hammer but then the hammer broke. Most of the wood was way too long for the stove. Also, there was a warning note on the stove about bad propane and a wild left burner. I lit the right burner and it exploded in my face, burning my hands. The regulator was bad.

Loved this place. Not sure what was up with the solar system, but the lights did not work. Other than that, great stay.

We absolutely loved our stay here. The cabin is lovely and well-maintained; mattresses were comfortable. We enjoyed watching and listening to the birds at dusk and in the morning, as well as hiking on the trail network that goes right by the cabin.

Beautiful location and a cute little cabin. My nephew finally fulfilled his dream of making a spear with an atlatl while we were there. We made some great family memories.

Still lots of snow! Yay! Cozy night with lots of good, dry wood and someone even set up a solar panel so now there are 2 electric lights and a box to plug your charging cord into! Pretty Fancy 🤩

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hogan Cabin. We skied in from the Chief Joseph groomed trails, mostly level, a tad downhill or flat from there to the cabin, although longer at 6.5 miles. We had shuttled a car around, so our ski out was much shorter at about 4.5 miles with a nice gentle climb and fairly easy downhill, then mostly flat out to Highway 43. It was a very cold day and snowed on us the entire way into the cabin, it took us 4 hours to get there as we took it slow and easy (Ha, we're a little on the older side at 65 and 60!) The cabin was VERY cold when we arrived....EVERY thing in the cabin was frozen....liquid soap, water left in pans, food left in the cupboard! There isn't a thermometer, but it was below 10. Thank you to the people before us who left plenty of wood INside the cabin and OUTside as well! We got a fire going and all was good. The woodstove works great, but could use some TLC with a fix on the cord that goes on the door so it seals. We shoveled out the route to the outhouse after we settled in, then shoveled the looooong path to the woodshed the next morning. A sled would be handy to move wood to the cabin as the wheelbarrow bogs down in the snow, especially because the tire is flat! There is plenty of nice dry wood in the wood shed. We had a beautiful layover day and we skied up beyond the cabin on the groomed trail to a road that contours to the south and ties back in with the Shoofly trail....about a 3 mile loop. Very nice sunny day! All in all it was a great trip, we love the FS rental cabins! We did NOT have any snowmobile traffic, so it was very quiet.

We've enjoyed an annual ski in/stay at Hogan cabin for 30yrs. The addition of solar lights was nice (and reduced the risk of a propane lantern fire). Not sure why the USFS rate increased from $25 to $45 (plus $9 for recreation.com). Fine trip.

Super cold Friday night, Nov 11th, -15F, but the cabin heated up well. Wood was a bit low but we planned ahead and took a chainsaw. So we just cut more wood and left about 2x more than we used. Grandkids had a good time too. I'll be back to the cabin this summer/fall and I will take a damper for the wood stove and install it, it will be more efficient with it. All in all had a great time, thanks for the opportunity to rent it.

What a fun place to go spend some quiet time. A solar panel had just been I stalled so there were a couple of lights. This was an unexpected surprise and very nice!

Quiet, and far enough from the road to feel a little secluded from the traffic. Perfect. Bring D batteries for the lantern. Watch your head.

Just a cute 4 bunkbed cabin with a vaulted toilet. Cross country ski up to Gibbons Pass and enjoy your days snowshoeing in the winter.

Great ski in the week of Christmas. Cabin was comfortable, cozy. A posted sign of orientation could be helpful. I was initially unclear the she’d had the same code and the axe was in the shed (I wanted to leave the porch stocked with wood.) the only disappointment was there was no propane lantern (I thought I saw somewhere there was supposed to be). Overall great experience though. Thanks!

What a lovely cabin. Very small, but has everything you need. Lots of pots and pans (some pretty dirty though, but the pre people left a little whiskey, so all cool), and there were even gas lamps. Stayed for 2 nights and had a great time.

So unfortunately I couldn't make it all the way to the cabin due to the amount of snow on the final stretch. I was probably about 3-4 miles away from the cabin before I hit really thick snow on the dirt road. I have a Tacoma with off road tires and there was no way I would have made it. A snowmobile would have made it but the road from that point on looked to have long stretches of snow then long stretches of dirt. I attempted to go in the back route, off go HWY 93. The road from there that takes you to the top of the mountain was clear and sunny the entire way up. Took about 40 minutes to reach the top and it was a beautiful drive. However once I got to the other side, ape 5 miles from the cabin, there was so much snow again. I drove small patches of it and scouted it every time I made it about 100 ft. It got so thick I had to turn around. There was no sign of anyone that had been on either road. I turned around and then my truck sunk in the snow and I got stuck. Luckily I had a shovel and after about 20 minutes I was able to dig out. There was no way of getting any help if I hadn't gotten out. I will say the area is beautiful but there was no way to get into the cabin. I have a lot of experience hiking Montana and that would still have been a long hike to get there. Mountain miles are far longer than street miles. I would highly recommend not to book this cabin until mid to late June when the temps have risen. Most of those spots I mentioned do not get any sunlight therefore the snow is going to be there all of spring. A 4 wheeler may have a better chance but be sure it has a winch in case it too sinks in the snow.

I love how quiet it is at Hogan Cabin. The stars are phenomenal. The cabin is very small but heats up quickly with the wood stove. The outhouse was super clean and convenient. The cribbage board and cards and other supplies were a nice surprise. The trail in from Trail Creek is flat but very rutted from snowmachines and not recommended for beginner skiers. The easiest way would be through the Chief Joseph XC ski trails for beginners.

Cabin is spectacular, our favorite cabin of the year so far! The fence around it and the shed all help you really feel you are out at some 1890's homestead. Watching storms pass by all day and evening was amazing. Cabin is in good condition and the cook stove inside works fine. We didn't see a soul for 24 hours, was perfect! Road conditions update: July 2020. Road to the cabin is passable. Pot holes are present but smooth rounded dirt edges and manageable. High clearance is recommended however you could make it in a 2 wheel drive passenger car if you are careful and know how to pick a line through rough spots. When I had my sedan I would have still attempted it and would just go slow. Could become an issue during wet weather. Watch your head going in and out, my buddy hit his head a few times so just make sure you duck. I had a good Stetson hat on so it warned me when I was about to bump my head. Dead trees around can move and fall in the wind, suggested that people steer clear of dead trees when the wind picks up, fortunately, the cabin is a good distance away from any dead stands of lodgepole.

Road going in is extremely rough. High clearance 4x4 recommended.

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
