Comfortable cabin near Philipsburg I enjoy washing bags of gravel to find the sapphire stones.

We had a momma moose hang outside our whole stay. Very quiet campground across the street and beautiful places to walk. Well equipped and rustic cleanliness. Not super remote so be prepared for cars of neighbors frequenting the road.

Stony Cabin is in a neat area, close to Philipsburg and across a dirt road is Stony Creek and the campground. The cabin is right on a dirt road and I can't imagine that being super fun in the summer with more road traffic...dust and not a lot of privacy. The campground across the dirt road is probably a better bet unless you want a cute little cabin to hang out in. The wood stove is awesome and heats that little cabin beautifully. The cabin sits at the base of a shale slope which is quite beautiful. The better view is from the campground though. I'm disappointed in people leaving a mess behind for others at these cabins. When we arrived it was painfully obvious the last people hadn't bothered to sweep the cabin or wipe down the table. The bowls and pans were all...gross. I would not plan on using them. There were bits of bacon and bacon grease all over the propane stove that's supplied. There were Clorox wipes right there and left... unused. It's just not the best way to begin your fun cabin stay to be cleaning up after someone else. When someone else leaves a mess it becomes your responsibility, so please just do the work to leave it nice for the next person. If we all left these places just a little nicer than we found them this system would really work well.

This was a great pick for our first FS rental experience. The cabin is in a great location if you’re looking to disconnect without having to be “off the grid”. Campground directly across the road provides a quick walk for the restroom. The road was a little busy for about 10 min on Saturday but other than that very quiet. The cabin is well stocked with firewood, a lantern and batteries, a few cooking supplies and cleaning supplies. Everything was tidy on our arrival. Very enjoyable stay, we will be back!

Cute cabin up Rock Creek. I definitely agree with the other reviews that this is not the cabin to book if you want a private, remote experience. It is right on the road across from a campground and near private residences. We were there in the winter and no one was camping, so it was pretty quiet. Classic FS cabin with basic amenities.

This has always been my favorite USFS cabin to enjoy a peaceful stay in the winter. The access is easy, the cabin is cozy, and the surroundings offer stunning views, especially in winter. Users have left the cabin clean and preserved over the years, which is not something that can be said for all places on the map. Always a good supply of firewood, and the best wood stove set up of ALL the cabins I have been to (kept me very comfortable on a -15 degree night this year).

Would appreciate it if people would clean up their dog poop.........perhaps a sign reminder and some plastic bags there would help. This same problem occurred last year when I stayed at the cabin. Appreciate the good quality firewood provided. Would be great to have a bathroom near the cabin instead of across the road.

While the cabin is just off the side road across from the campground, it is in a beautiful setting. ( Walk to main road for Rock Creek access for fishing). Cute, well stocked, extremely clean, very thick, comfortable and new mattresses are on each bunk bed (for 4 people total). Cute table, hutch, 2 burner stove with gas containers, toilet paper, dish towels, amazing! We never used the wood stove so can't comment on that. Two windows, one screened to let in fresh night air. The outhouse to use is across the street in the campground. Be aware, cattle are just barely down the road so if you have a dog who likes to chase, be sure to bring leashes/long lines for outdoors. Picnic table also outside. Excellent overnight for motorcycle adventuring as well.

My little family of four absolutely adored this place and we will definitely be returning. The creek is close by. Probably the cleanest vault toilets I’ve seen. Plus the camp host across the street was friendly and helpful.

Cabin is located at the top of Rock Creek. Pros: Good location for driving to a fishing access. Cons: located literally next to a rock hill so its kinda limited on cabin style shenanigans in so much as there's no open space to really stretch your legs with the kids. Overall, the cabin is a typical USFS cabin. I've stayed in a bunch and this is really no different than the others. It was a fun mid July experience, fishing was a plus. Fire roads up from the cabin a plus. Its quiet but its also located right across the road from a campground so it could be a gamble depending how much solitude you're looking for. Personally, I probably wont return to this one not for any reason against the USFS, location or things like that, just cause it really doesn't meet my what I've come to fancy as open fields and solitude for the simple reasons of the massive rock hill 20 feet off the cabin or campground across the road.

Stoney Cabin was exactly as portrayed in the Recreation.gov website. There were no surprises here. As such, the cabin and was great. Clean, and kept us out of the rain and cold weather. It was nice to have firewood provided for the cabin stove. We drove up Stoney Creek exploring and looking for sites to fly fish due to the high water run off in Rock Creek. While in route we collected fire wood for the camp fire. Using the campground facilities: outhouse as well as the fresh water well pump worked out well. Also, the camp ground host was super friendly and informative about the local area. A great guy!

Love this cabin, does the trick for our trip. Nothing fancy, small. It was cold this time so we cooked outside then all dined around the table inside in the warmth. Other than occasionally bumping my head (I’m 6’ 2”) it’s perfect.

This note is specifically to USFS administration of this site. I see you propose to raise the daily rate from $20 to $45.......I am OK with this if you place an outhouse near the cabin..........people do not go across the road to the campground and I have found evidence of this on practically every stay there. This is very unsanitary and you need to solve this..........it would not have to be a large bomb proof concrete structure just a modest outhouse. Let's get this done soon!!

The cabin was delightful! The fireplace works great kept us toasty warm all night! The wood shed was full but none was split and the wood boxes was empty. We did bring glue traps for mice with us and we were glad we did… two mice in four nights. We never did find a trail for the lake even though the campground sign showed it was there. It is a beautiful location and we will definitely return!

My Plein Air art group took 2 nights and 3 days there and we left deeply inspired and with some really great artwork, endless rock formations framed by beautiful creeks, aspens, pine, and cottonwood.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
