Always pleasant here.

Nice to see a new refrigerator, stove, pots & pans and a knife block. Furnace and everything else worked well. The only unfortunate part is that some people leave junk behind, as well as their food. The forest service specifically says to take all food with you when you leave. We end up hauling it out with our own garbage.

Our group of 7 cross-country skiers had a delightful stay at the Ochoco Ranger House and skiing the local marked trails by the Walton Lake Sno Park, only 8 miles away. The kitchen is a bit worn but fully functional with cook stove, refrigerator and plenty of basic kitchenware and cleaning supplies. There is no dishwasher. A large wooden dining room table and a spacious knotty-pine paneled living room with comfortable Mission-style seating add to the charm. We spotted a herd of 10 wild horses several times enjoying the spring grasses along the Ochoco creek.

Cool place to stay. Not enough snow to ski but explored, hiked, checked out Prineville. What a treat, thank you for the Christmas lights!

Great location as a base for exploring the area or just relaxing. We loved the living room and dining room but unfortunately the rest of the rooms need renovation/restoration. For the price charged I was expecting more reinvestment in the property

The cabin was warm and as clean as should be expected. It had easy access to the NF and it was fun to see the wild colts in the yard. Elk were all over as well.

The house has a ton of character and in a neat location but the cleanliness and repairs are hugely disappointing. The carpet is stained and filthy and should be replaced with hard wood. There was no vacuum provided. The fireplace was broken. I cancelled our other recreation.gov cabin reservation after this experience. There is a lot of potential for these unique stays but they need to me managed more efficiently and hands on.

Kitchen nicely stocked with pots/pans/plates etc. Bring kitchen towels.

The cabin has had deferred maintenance for too long. Paint was peeling off the kitchen and bedroom ceilings. The bath mat was glued to the floor in the downstairs bathroom which makes me wonder how long it's been since the floor was thoroughly washed. I'm not sure who determines what appliances are placed in the cabin but the oven runs at 150 degrees too low. The toaster didn't function well. There was a good selection of pots, pans and silverware though. The electric fireplace doesn't function well. In the cabin listing you might mention folks bring an extra blanket as the cabin gets chilly - most folks bring a sleeping bag for their bedding, but an extra blanket could be useful too. I was so glad to see the grungy dining room carpet had been replaced. Now the carpets in the halls and bedroom need cleaning or replaced with the same material as in the dining room. This year we had tons of snow and a wonderful time skiing around the Walton Lake area. We saw the wild horses and many deer.

The house was very cool. Everything was very quiet which was what I was hoping for, and it was absolutely beautiful. Will definitely stay here again

We have stayed here many years in a row and always enjoy it. It is like traveling back in time, comfortably.

The cabin was cute and cozy, but absolutely infested with mice. We figured that there was a possibility of mice when booking a remote cabin in the winter, but this was so much worse than we anticipated. There was a very large and very dead mouse in the center of the dining room, mouse droppings in EVERY room (including on the kitchen counter), and a live one who joined us for breakfast in the kitchen. The location of the cabin is great, but I would not recommend unless you want to risk obtaining hantavirus.

Had a great time at the cabin. Could have used a bit more heat as it wasn’t quite keeping up with the cold. Went cross-country skiing up the road at Walton lake and had an overall wonderful time.

Plan more time than you think you need to explore the trails and Walton Lake. Absolutely beautiful area with many trails.

This was our 11th guard station rental, and they all have varying amenities. With running water and electricity, we were excited to enoy a cushy relax-cation, and we were not disappointed! The carpets could use some cleaning, but the wood paneled common rooms on the first floor are beautiful. The front porch and back porch are both great areas for deer and bird watching. This rental is nothing but charming and we will certainly be back!

This is a lovely, well-preserved historic USFS property on a beautiful and quiet site, with several possible walks/hikes nearby. The highlight for us was the living room, or "Great Room," with its knotty pine-paneled walls and oak floors, mission furniture and fireplace ("electric" fire only). A very cozy place to read, rest and visit. And tip of the hat to staff for the Christmas decor. We also enjoyed the well-stocked kitchen. Although we didn't use it, the two-car garage is a plus. Bedroom furnishings were spartan but adequate (bring your own bedding/sleeping bag). We were only two,but it's a great place for small groups. Indeed, the stained carpets in bedrooms, hall and dining room show heavy use and should be replaced when funding becomes available. We will definitely go again, and recommend it to others. Thanks to Ochoco NF for a lovely experience.

Code given to me did NOT open the door. There was no backup plan to deal with this scenario, no assistance available. We travelled a long distance to stay here without a backup plan on a freezing cold night. The emergency after hours number left near the door was for the local sheriffs department, not the Forest Service, but was not identified so we called the number. I spoke with a polite sheriff who even contacted a Forest Service security officer to try to find assistance to open the door but they had no access to the info that would have been helpful. This ruined our vacation. Please have a backup plan in case you cannot gain entry to any rented Forest service facility.

We had a relaxing stay at the old house and enjoyed fishing within a few miles. Also drove to the big summit Prairie and look forward to our next trip to eastern Oregon.

Rustic cabin was certainly rustic. However it met all our needs within an incredibly beautiful setting. It was very peaceful, close to the fishing grounds and close enough to town. The kitchen was well stocked, the dining and the living rooms were beautiful with the original wood work. The cabin does need some upgrades. The carpet in the dining and bedrooms , kitchen and bathroom flooring need to be replaced. Overall the cabin was a great place to be.

Enjoyed staying in a cabin /home with lots of history. Beautiful living and dining rooms that take you back in time. The kitchen and bathrooms could use a little TLC, need some updating or restoring to original condition. The area is very quiet and beautiful in whichever direction you decide to explore.

This cabin is a really special place. We had a great family weekend up there, away from the distractions of modern technology. I love the wood paneling and old handmade iron door hardware, the selection of random puzzles and games and books and maps left by past occupants, and the comfortable patio and front porch spaces. In the middle of a hot spell, the house stayed nice and cool at all times. All that said, the cabin could use a little sprucing up. Beds and carpets were great, but new coats of paint are needed in some places, as well as some outdoor work on the crumbling concrete.

Great house. The appliances worked. The fridge was missing some shelves but other than that it was a great house.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
