The tow path between the Carderock parking lot and the campsite was closed with a detour. It might be worth noting when sending the confirmation. Glad to see the portable toilets back at the campsite rather than across the bridge and near the road.

Good location for Scouts camping with actives along the C&O towpath, including hiking along the Billy Goat trails, bike riding along the C&O towpath and listing the Great Falls of the Potomac.

Stayed in mid-October. The main issue we had was a lack of communication and lack of details. Reserved two group camp sites at Marsden Tract and came across several unexpected issues. 1) Parking was available at Carderock BUT there was construction along the Canal and the construction workers yelled at some of our parents for taking the direct route to the camp site. The alternate path tripped the transit time which made it challenging to get supplies to camp. We were never told about the construction. 2) Billy Goat trail in that area largely unavailable due to renovation. We were never told about that. 3) We had to hike around for a long time to find the port a pots which were very dirty. 4) one of the sites was pretty overgrown and couldnt accommodate the advertised 30 campers. Good location and manageable with better and more timely information.

No site markings on entrance but there are separate entrances for each grouping of 3 sites.

It's a great simple site. We were cycling the C&O canal and found the site very convenient to use. We also met the ranger who was very helpful giving us general tips for our stay.

Campsite was spacious. Only issue is parking and getting everything to the campsite. We parked by Old Angler's Inn, but spots were very scarce with day parkers and no specific parking area for overnighters.

This was a gorgeous camp site/experience. I should have read more about the parking situation; which ngl sucked pretty hard because i didnt come prepared w a cart to shuttle my things from the "trail drop off" about 1/4-1/3 of a mile to the site. It was a steap hill at first headed there. Then, once i was done loading things, i had to park what must be an actual mile or so from the "trail drop off" -where u are not allowed to park. So, that was also a bit of a drag. I should have been more prepared or picked a different spot for my needs. But, the view on campsite #3 is absolutely incredible- (or is it a make shift spot closest and somewhat connected to #??? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ). slept and had a nice camp fire dinner at the head of a cliff overlooking the potomac river. It made the juice worth the arduous squeeze. Also on my firat walk to the site i was greeted by a big blue heron on my right and what was either an otter or a beaver by the way it swam, but it quickly dove down near the tree line so i did not get the best look. So great. I will also say it does kind of feel like ur camping on some really gorgous suburbs. Because you are. There's houses and lots of civilization nearby- the grocery/hardware store is 8 min drive away. Perhaps ideal for the itinerate cyclist or backpacker passing through. I didnt explore much i just passed through as a stop along a longer drive down south in november.

In the very beginning I should say that place is beautiful: forest and river, birds and animals. Also location is very good to reach attractions of the town. But I never expected the condition of the bathroom! Dirty, never cleaned, full of excrement! No paper, soap or water. We came 9/01 it was sighted that facility was checked on the 8/22. On 9/03 new sight says about checking on the 9/01. Of cause it was not true. No shower was there only one cold water column. The second big surprise was that we could not reach out our camping place even they told us what clearance should have our car. We needed to bring all our stuff from the parking place to the island. No electricity at all. Please take these circumstances into account when you travel especially with children.

Very nice camp sight. Comfortable and good location. The water was not as close as I thought (or I just couldn’t find it).

Lovely campsite, great experience.

We did not love camping here; it was a less than stellar experience. The parking lot was far from our campsite and we didn’t feel we’d been adequately warned of this situation before showing up. Also, there was no ranger or park authority on site to encourage campers to follow campsite rules (like quiet hours), so we were got very little sleep due to our extremely noisy neighbors who were partying loudly until after 2am.

Great spot for kids: 1 mile walk from parking, flat open ground, and fire pits. Right off the canal, so fishing too.

This is a great location for a youth camping trip with a wooded feel, yet close to the city.

No parking and a hike to site. Copperhead snakes present in the area with rabid animals as well.

nice campsite. Close to the city, but far enough to feel far way
@JasonG374 · Camped on Apr 30, 2021 at Campsite #3
We camped with a Scout group at the Youth Group Site #3. The site was level with plenty of space for everybody to set-up their tents. There were two fire rings with stumps/benches to sit on around the fire. There were also plenty of picnic tables for the group. The port-a-johns were about a 1/4 mile from the campsite, next to the drop-off area. The Marsden Trace address on Waze/Google maps takes you directly to the drop-off (no parking) area. For groups, I suggest dropping gear here and then driving back to the parking areas mentioned in your reservation. The parking area itself is about 3/4 mile from site 3.

Marsden Tract is a beautiful campsite, with lots of space and good access to water.
@BruceL492 · Camped on Apr 9, 2021 at Campsite #1
I was a little disappointed to find that the porta-toilets had been moved from there normal location. and there was no signage stating their new location. As a result I fond that some people had used the old area as a latrine. with excrement and urine all over the place. I was also disappointed that a camping location so near to city services did not have water available.
@KatherineP679 · Camped on Mar 19, 2021 at Campsite #3
This is a great group camping location for hiking or biking the C&O or climbing at Carderock, but they have not serviced the port-a-potties since November. They were completely disgusting and full of trash. Hiking 0.7 miles for a usable bathroom is not acceptable.
@KristyW609 · Camped on Mar 12, 2021 at Campsite #1
The campsite was fantastic. Great location. Had to put in some effort to plan the arrival and departure logistics, but would be happy to do it again. However, the bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. Looked like they hadn't been serviced in over a year. Made me want to vomit, seriously. I've never seen port-a-johns in such disgusting conditions.
@KevinC694 · Camped on Feb 27, 2021 at Campsite #5
Site 5 is amazing! Really well done by the BSA Scouts! Flat and level and clean and lots of room. Even a bike rack. It is a bit of a hike to the parking. There is temp parking across the canal but then you have to move. Really great site!
@MikeS254 · Camped on Jan 30, 2021 at Campsite #1
we had a great time.
@NathanC642 · Camped on Jan 29, 2021 at Campsite #4
Toilets filthy, my campsite had a deer feeder that would turn on every so often in the middle of the night and wake me up. Access to the C&O canal towpath was very convenient. A restaurant was also very accessible. Don’t plan on packing too much in, the campsite is not convenient to parking (I knew this before I booked).

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
