Lewiston, one of Maine’s largest cities, blends urban attractions with access to beautiful nature spots. Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary, a 372-acre wildlife preserve, is a great place for hiking and birdwatching. For those seeking a true camping experience, Range Pond State Park, about 15 miles away, offers lakeside camping, swimming, and picnic areas. The nearby Androscoggin Riverlands State Park features trails for hiking, biking, and snowshoeing in winter. Lewiston is also home to Bates College, where visitors can explore art exhibits at the Olin Arts Center Museum. The city’s historic downtown features impressive 19th-century architecture, charming cafés, and a vibrant arts scene. Annual events such as the Great Falls Balloon Festival draw visitors from all over to witness colorful hot air balloons soaring over the Androscoggin River.
Barnes Field Campground is located in the Androscoggin Ranger District, White Mountain National Forest (1 hr 38 min west of Lewiston, ME) with an elevation of 1,286 feet. There are a total of 11 campsites including 4 tent-only sites. The campground is open all year. 7 sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 40 feet. All sites are currently reservable. Reservations can be booked up to 6 months in advance. Prices start at $45.00 per night. Activities include hiking trails.
