This campground should not offer RV camping. The road to the campground is not wide enough for two vehicles and some of the grades are 5% and loose dirt. Someone could easily lose control if they had to stop and back up for another passing vehicle. Not a great site, but had some decent views on the trails.

Drove my mercedes c240 thru the dirt road. I didn't know about the condition of the road in advance. I reached in night around 10 pm. Set up my tent in the light of LED lanterns. There were lot of insects attracted to the light.

There is a long, unpaved road to get to the site. We arrived late at night and had a bit of trouble locating Site 5 (it's a bit tucked away, and the site numbers aren't easily visible, especially at night). We stayed one night and then backpacked into Pine Valley the next day. For the night at China Camp Campground, we brought plenty of water (none is available at the site). Site 5 had a nice flat stretch for pitching 2 tents. It was nice and quiet, not crowded at all, and had easy access to the Pine Valley trailhead.

The camp ground is deep in the forest higher up in the mountains; I took spot #5, which is on the far end of loop one, further away from the others. The ground is not very even but that's not a huge problem. The drive up is dirt and there are some rougher patches; you might want to be cautious if you have a sedan and it has a low bottom. That said, the drive was a lot of fun and the mountain was beautiful. Cell and internet connection was spotty on the way up but I have both cell and internet at the campground. The bathroom was tiny and not very clean but was ok for one night's stay.

This is a pretty, compact campsite. As some of the other reviews note, it has few really level spots and the sites are small. The key spot is 5 (not 4 -- the signage is poor and the previous reviewer got the number wrong), but 7 and 10 are also good. I went middle of the week and had the place to myself. It is remote and there's not a lot going on around the camp itself. I was unable to do any day-hiking as my dog was recovering from surgery but it was an excellent place to sack out, relax, and read for a few days. A mile further south the road summits and there's a great open spot for star gazing. Big benefit - almost no poison oak at the camp, at least in early April. Tassajara Road up to the camp isn't as bad as it's made out to be. Easily done in a Forester and a few overnight hikers left a Ford Escort at a nearby trailhead.

I liked it, the road is quite an adventure but passable when dry. I’d definitely go again.

Road was impassable in the rain. Worst national forest road I have ever driven on before it started raining.

Second time to Ventana Wilderness, first at China Camp. I’ll be back, but note: This is neither a national park nor the Sierras; this is wilderness managed by the Forest Service. Set your expectations accordingly. - I went backpacking starting from China Camp back in 2016, so I knew what to expect. Tassajara road is all dirt for the last several miles. Low clearance vehicles may have trouble. - The entrance to China Camp is easy to miss – it’s clearly marked but at an awkward angle behind a curve. - The Camp Host info board has neither a campground map nor a general area map. Once inside the grounds, the only visible sign points to the left for campsites 6-10. The only numbers we could see designating each site were handwritten on placards at the picnic tables; it was time-consuming to find our site at night. Another group behind us clearly had the same problem. Also, there’s no sign, but Jeffery Road is behind the gate off to the right of the bathrooms/board. - Campsite 4 is where it’s at! We initially booked campsite 2 but to 4 the next day. Most sites are right up next to each other and not flat, and they remind me of why I strongly prefer dispersed camping. Site 4 is flat and tucked on the edge with an amazing view of the mountain range. - I normally camp with a group, but it was just two women this time. I thought I would enjoy an empty campground, but it actually was a little eerie having absolutely no one around. - As we were leaving for our day hike, we chatted briefly with a very nice and helpful attendant who came to check up on the vault toilets and campsites. - Pine Ridge Trail is breathtaking. Trailhead is south of the campground and clearly marked – walk down Tassajara and you’ll see it. Be prepared to get thwapped by miles of overgrown shrubs if you don’t bring shears. You do get cell reception at a few spots along the way to Church Creek Divide.

Had a very relaxing time with the family. The facilities were well kept and clean. People are mainly the problem with not helping keep bathrooms clean and toilet paper flying out of the outhouses. For future campers, be mindful that recreation workers do their best to keep remote sites like this clean, please do your part and don't make it harder by being messy. Its a place we can all enjoy if we take care of it together.

This is a primitive camp site. The spaces are clean and come with fire pits and tables. Plenty of space between sites. The only issue was the site we had reserved through Rec.gov was not reserved, lucky everything worked out. The park rangers put out placards on the tables with the reservations details which is nice. You have to walk around to find the sites, not an issue at all.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
