Love this place, especially in winter for the off-track cross-country skiing. The snow has never failed in February! And you never have trouble getting a reservation. The last mile of road isn't plowed, and the last half-mile can be tricky in snowy conditions, but I've never failed to get all the way to the cabin with 4-wheel drive and (sometimes) chains. And hey, hauling gear 1/2 mile is a snap, if it comes to it.The cabin is cozy, spacious and warm, and great for groups, with 3 bedrooms and a futon.The best, most scenic skiing can be had going up the river from the cabin, as far as you like; or along Ettein Ridge. The quiet winter surroundings will astound you, as will the night sky. Do it! You'll come to love winter out here.

We didnt end up staying the night. The cabin is in serious need of repair. It had broken windows and torn screens; as a result, the cabin was completely infested with flies. There were dozens of buzzing and dead flies around each window. The mattresses were filthy; a couple of the upstairs ones reeked of urine. Its too bad because the area was beautiful; there is a river a few feet away with campsites. The campground was empty during our stay in early October, so we still enjoyed the area.

Sad for me to see this beautiful place in disrepair after having spent summers working on it 1994-1996. The water well needs repaired. We went expecting to have water and there's none. It hadn't been mowed around the cabin area. The front porch needs several boards replaced before someone falls through. The chinking is coming off under some of the windows. There is a rodent problem, lots of rock chucks to chew things up. They have been chewing holes in the porch planking. The previous renters have not cleaned up after themselves. This is our 4th year renting and we always leave it better than we find it. Needs to be checked on more often by FS staff. We had a wonderful time as always but this beautiful spot definitely needs some tlc.

I was never sent the code for the padlock on the backdoor and because I had booked the cabin over the New Year's holiday there was no one in any Forest Service offices across the state to give me the code. Had to book a hotel for one night. I did eventually receive the code and spent one night. The propane heater in the cabin is less than adequate and the cabin didn't really warm up until I had to check out the next day. A wood stove would definitely make this place better! Probably a lovely place in the warmer months.

The cabin was infested with stink bugs. The area is trashed by ATV’s and cattle. No propane was left for lanterns. Place was emptied of kitchen ware.

We had another great time at Judith Guard Station. We stayed for 12 days this time, late August-Early September. We enjoyed a lot of 4 wheeler rides on the trails and stayed cool in the streams as the temps were into the 90's. We tried mining for yogo sapphires with no success. The hunting wasn't good this year due to the high temps. The cabin was in good working order for the most part. The back/kitchen door lock and handle are still broken and do not latch on either. We had to lock cabin from outside during the night and keep something in front of it to keep door closed. There were a lot of screens with holes in them too. This cabin is a fun, restored and historic cabin that I would recommend.

Wow! very impressed with how stocked and furnished it was! Friends have a rental vacation cabin and have constant theft of small items. Was an wonderful trip and highly recommend it for others. Played taps on Memorial Day and put up/down the flag. Only thing that would have made it even more perfect would be able to keep the horses there to.

Unfortunately we could not stay because of weather. Drove up for the day and code that was emailed to us did not work.

Wonderful old house, not just a cabin. Lovely spot and wonderful character.

We had a wonderful time hiking (no snowshoeing because of lack of snow) and playing cards.

Fantastic Cabin, so much history. We luckily booked Sun-Tues. Very limited traffic. The river nearby was such a lovely feature. There is a water pump across the road. Wasn't clean-ish, but its a cabin folks. Outhouse was spotless.. Battery Led lights a lovely addition to add to your bag. Stop nearby at The Blue Nugget for Ice, Beer and great food!!!!! Love this place

Very cool place, but wasn't very clean when we arrived. Beautiful area, beautiful cabin. Tons of traffic, but everywhere is these days.

It's a wonderful historic cabin. I would not rent this during the summer as there is a campground right in front of it. The quiet, peaceful environment was why I came, so don't think I would have enjoyed it as much with lots of other people around. There ARE mice. They run around between the floorboards at night. They didn't bother me, and I never saw them but if you don't like mice, this is not the cabin for you. Lots of bird life and wildlife. Great hiking trails. In winter propane heat and stove are a big bonus. I will be back next winter or early spring.

More like 3.5 for me: The cabin itself was a 5 - really nice restoration, and comfortable with 3 bedrooms. Nice, large kitchen, great dining space. The front porch is large and a great place to read and take in the scenery. The setting I would rate a 4. Nice area, close to the river with interesting cliffs. Fishing opportunities and hiking trails nearby. As for the experience, it was a 2. There is a popular ATV trail 10 feet off the front porch, and the weekend we went there was a lot of noise and activity. Nearby campers would drive up and park in front to use the cabin's outhouse. It would probably be a much better experience in the winter or on a weekday. One final note: there is no fire ring at the cabin, so don't plan a menu around fire and charcoal grilled food (like we did!)

We rented the cabin for 3 nights the end of June. I worked for the FS when I was in high school. One of the projects I worked on was preparing the cabin for installing the propane line. I hadn't been there since then, summer of 1996. We were so impressed with the job done to restore the cabin and all the amenities. It's definitely not roughing it very hard. I would stay again, no questions. When we arrived, it was clean and had plenty of cooking supplies. A great time was had! Talking about making a yearly tradition out of it.

People before us didn’t clean very well, sticky old food in kitchen and crumbs on floor in dining area, but cabin is so nice so I cleaned when we got there and when we left so hopefully the next time we go the people before us do a better job having it ready for us. Such a nice historic place!

Two of the lanterns were broken from prior guests and should’ve been replaced before our arrival , also the yard was not mowed so I couldn’t let my granddaughter out in the yard , and the pans were put away dirty , we cleaned the cabin and dishes spotless and left it in better condition then prior guests as we were raised to do hopefully our next year stay will be better

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
