very nice campground on the parkway, we loved that our site was right by the creek where we found lots of crawdads and salamanders. otter lake and the james river are both only a few miles away on the parkway which was really lovely. no cell service at the campground but i had service at both otter lake and the james river visitor center area. very quiet and wooded, but the sites along the creek are somewhat close to the parkway, though we didnt have any problems with that (a few groups of motorcycles went by in the morning but that was the only time it was noticable). the camp hosts were kind and helpful and rangers were around as well. no firewood for sale at the campground but we went into town a few miles up the road from the parkway to get some. lots of kindling around to be gathered though. we had a lovely time!

The night I reserved for camping it was raining heavy all day long. I could not get a refund on my fee. There should be an exception on refunds for bad weather.

So quiet. I'm told weekend are busy though. Great hike, sorry and not step for FL folks.

We had a campsite right near the bathroom path, so we didn’t really have neighbors. Bathrooms are cleaned daily it seemed. Campground host was kind and told us where to get firewood. It was 5 minutes away. Go to the bridge near the James river visitors center. Drive up and down the parkway! Stop at every pull off (there aren’t many). Tent pad was also nice and dry.

This has become a Memorial Day tradition to camp here. Clean bathrooms and campsites. Beautiful area. The only issue we had this time was the campsite was covered in about a foot of leaves we had to clear. Luckily, the campers next to us went a purchased a leaf rake they let us borrow. Can't beat the Blue Ridge Mountains!

There are a number of hikes in the area, including along the Otter Creek and a loop trail around Otter Creek. The James River Visitor Center also has picnic tables and two short hikes. The Peaks of Otter area, about 30 miles away, has hikes with greater elevation changes. Some of the campground sites, both reservable and walk up, are directly on the creek. Most of the sites are flat and wooded. The campground does not sell firewood, but allowable firewood is available within a miles at the H&H Exxon station in Big Island, VA. There are no showers at the campground, and the restrooms are quite old and rundown.

Camped here for one evening as we were traveling the BRP from mile post 1 to the end (or so we hoped). Our spot was wonderful, and very private. We backed up to a small creek and could only see the person to our left. Beautiful this time of year, and almost no one else in the campground. The restrooms were clean, warm and well lit when the motion lights were on - but bring a flashlight if you er... need to stay a while :)

We had a quick weekend getaway and this was our first time staying at Otter Creek. The experience was delightful from start to finish. It was easy to select and book our site, the park ranger on duty was very friendly and helpful, and our camp site was beautiful. Not too close to neighbors. Bathroom facilities were very clean. Everyone there was polite and respectful. Lots of great hiking and sights very nearby!

Awesome campground. Sites are well-spaced, the trees are lovely and plentiful, and the spider population in the ladies' bathroom was something like three measly daddy-longlegs in the corners - in late September ! Couldn't ask for fewer spiders than that.

We were drawn to this campsite due to its proximity to the Appalachian Trail! I had no idea that we would spend more time on the Otter Creek Trail that started right next to our campground! We were able to make trips to the local H&H Mart for firewood and ice. We will definitely be back!

Very handy having the campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway and close to Lynchburg city. Bummer is not having Internet. It is nice having level camping areas (as opposed to Peaks of Otter campsite) and a handy comfort station. One reason for not giving a 5 star rating was the poor condition of the bench seats which were quite rotted wood (site 0037) and the poor condition of the fire grate. Fortunately my friend had site 036 just across the road. It would be great if the fire grates could be leveled easily for frying/cooking. Next year I will look at taking some rocks or sticks of wood to put under the fire pit rim to provide some leveling. Staff were very accommodating and it was a good experience. The restroom (comfort station) was clean when I arrived :).

The camp host was nice to us, BUT the park ranger was a major JERK! I stopped at the checkin booth and the ranger was not in. I head someone holler at me from across the campground (What do you want?) That was the park ranger in his pickup. That is NOT the way to talk to park guest! I asked him about how to approach dump station with my camper and his response was (YOU MAKE A MESS, YOU CLEAN IT UP!!) My wife said he's an ass, lets go! This is a major reason my wife and I drive to North Carolina to camp as the rangers and such are MUCH friendlier and act like they want you you there!

Beverly, the host, is the BEST ... Loved the campground and loved the site I had.

Ended up leaving the same day we arrived giving up two nights that we had reserved. Multiple people walked right through our campsite regardless of our tent. The bench on our table wasn't screwed in so it would fall off when sitting. We recently purchased a new "glamping" tent which is 10x14. We called before we came to confirm it would fit but ended up with a 10x10 pad. This wouldn't have been that big of a problem but the pad was in poor condition so the rim was extra high and sharp. After setting up camp and hanging out for a few hours, decided it wasn't worth our time with all the people just wandering into our site. The whole point of camping is to get away from crowds, not pay to sleep in it. Just my opinion from a spoiled rockies camper.

@BranJen - Santa Clara, CA

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
