Easy to find. Cozy cabin. Hard beds. Nice having stove and lights. Found one dead mouse. Heard a bear in the brush below the cabin. Very pretty views. Great intro to FS cabin. If the prairie fever starts affecting your family too bad, there is a prairie stage stop restraunt open 20mins from the cabin.

The Horse Prairie Cabin is cozy and almost as described. There are 3 bunk beds (6 beds). There is a healthy rodent population with several family members spotted. Left garbage bag out during day and they got into it. The flys were absolutely horrible (we were there in October). I think they hatched with the wood stove going and theyd buzz the ceiling into the night and fall out of the sky onto you. Also, dont look under the sink. Would also advise bringing cleaning supplies. Pretty obvious not everyone agrees on what clean is. The mop is missing and the floor was disgusting. The wood stove worked pretty good once it was adjusted to keep smoke from coming out the seams of the chimney. Plenty of firewood. No water after September. There was decent cell service with Verizon. Overall, its probably pretty typical of Forest Service cabins.

The Solar system and LED lights was an awesome addition to the cabin this year!

Well cared for cabin on a gorgeous prairie. Lots of wildlife to see! Made it almost exactly 0.5 miles from the cabin; the road became impassable due to snow drifts, but the walk up wasn’t bad at all. Definitely want to revisit!

The staff on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest do a great job of keeping this resource in good shape for visitors (not an easy task I'm sure given the historic nature of the building). This was our 7th trip (one year we had to go to Bloody Dick Cabin) and each year we find new local places to explore. New to experience this year was right at the cabin, and that was a healthy population of Pygmy Rabbits - a unique and endemic population to SW Montana. Coming late in July as we do, each year it seems we are closer to or in the middle of fire season. Air quality was fine, but we did have smoke from the Moose Fire across the divide. We are always mindful of if and when to have a fire in the firepit out front.

This was one of our favorite cabins we have ever rented. The views are wonderful and the photos on the site do not do it justice. You get to see a long way across the prairie to the mountain range east of I-15 35+ miles away. The good: Easy drive weather permitted in a car. If there are medium+ rains you may have a challenge due to the mud not to mention snow. Excellent Verizon coverage of 4 - 4.5 bars with data too. Nice propane stove with oven. A wood stove is in the kitchen. Nice dining table with 3 backed chairs. There are 3 bunk beds so 6 beds are available although they are a little noisy. A previous reviewer pointed this out 6 months ago. We told the Dillon Ranger Station also but a month later from our stay they still have not updated the site. Of course you can see 3 bunk beds in the photos. Propane lights with 2 in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. Nice ADA vault pit toilet. A few games and puzzles. Fire pit. Lots of wood. Locked gate for privacy that appears to have been added recently. Water is supplied June-September and there is a sink that drains outside. Creek a short distance away but not recommended for drinking. Heard wolves, coyotes and all kinds of birds with the Western Meadowlark being our favorite. Prairie dogs abound with elk and moose sighted. Some reports of bear sightings in the journals. The bad: Notified the Dillon Ranger Station May 18, 2022 that there is no mop or mop bucket or shovel as site states. Also told them that the ax was was broken and wood splitter maul was barely hanging on. Swallows a bit irritating with nests around the cabin mostly on the sides. At the time of our stay there were none over the porch fortunately. There was a thin string across the kitchen area for hanging some clothing but there is no clothes hangers or rods. According to journals two different people locked themselves out and ended up breaking windows to get back in. Keep back door unlocked please. Bring fly traps.

First time staying in FS cabin. Loved it!! Was clean, had firewood, stayed toasty warm with the wood stove, even with the blizzard we had one morning. Will do it again. The propane cookstove and lights were wonderful. We are used to camping in a wall tent during hunting season and this was a step up for sure. (Still love tent camping too.) Wasn’t sure what equipment/supplies were there so brought our own cooking/cleaning supplies. Though most people could probably get by with the pots, pans and griddle that was there. Vault toilet was clean and well supplied. Nice job FS for the upkeep on this cabin. Cell phone service was great and even able to watch some YouTube.

Great cabin! Just be prepared to provide your own lighting. The lanterns attached to the propane system lacked mantles, and none of the stores in Dillon had them in stock.

Great place to stay for any adventure. Used the cabin while hunting black bear in the Blood Dick Valley (no luck though because weather didn’t cooperate).

BEWARE! FS doesn't stock the woodpile. We enjoyed our stay for one night and two days at this cabin. It was very clean and no sign of rodents, despite reportings of such in the log book. Only 1.4 mile ski into this sweet cabin. The landscape is beautiful! We had high winds when we xc skied in, pulling sleds behind us. I had called the ranger station ahead of time to learn about road conditions. Fortunately, I asked about wood also. The FS person told me that the wood was low and we'd need to bring our own. (WHAT? I've never experienced this in all of my cabin rentals). We brought our own firewood, but because of cold and high winds, we burned thru it and left a day early.

Overall, good stay. Would ask FS to update the web descriptions to be more accurate on what is provided at cabin (6 bunks, not 4; Propane provided so don't bring as indicated, and any other differences). Cabin plenty warm for late October, wood adequate but some pretty gnarly. Trapped 4 deer mice while there so be Hanta aware- BTW, phone service was excellent on Verizon and even my AT&T prepaid.

Road going up was very rough. Place is beautiful and running water in the sink is very nice. Antelope in the yard and gophers all over. Also, thank you to whoever left the bottle of Pendleton. It was much appreciated. 😉

We had a great time at the cabin. It was nice to be able to find a cabin to sleep 6. The only thing that was a bummer was that the water wasn't turned on.

This is a very well-appointed FS Cabin in a remote area of the Beaverheads. You will need alternate modes of transportation the reach the cabin in winter/spring. It is a mile+ uphill road to the cabin from the nearest plowed road.

This a great cabin. No electricity but a great gas stove and gas lights. The wood stove is excellent and the views unbeatable. Didn't see any but Im guessing there are mice. They need a warm place in the winter too. Bring newspaper for the stove and you might also throw in a couple extra mantles for the lights.

I wanted to thank you for this site and especially for the notifications feature. Thanks to your site and my subscription I was able to book a campsite I've been annoyingly trying to book for 5 years unsuccessfully. So thank you.

@Wondering - Oregon

Wow! Woke up this morning to a notification that a favorite had opened at Paulina, and when I went to check, it was there. This membership just paid for itself in the first 24 hours I owned it. Couldn't take the site it conflicted with a trip already set, but it truly was there. Thanks Tons.

@CarlaLThompson - Colorado

I just love this site and I tell everyone about it! It's so competitive to secure desired campsites and the alerts really help track when sites free up. The best part of this story is our alert notified a cancellation the next day!!!!!! Just incredible!!!
